Coming: Another Battle to Protect The Ozone

Many thanks to Jael Ever for allowing me to interrupt her series on alternative energies, so that I can alert Earth End readers to the newly discovered threat of the extremely high loss of the ozone layer over the Arctic.  Most scientists agree that this important layer that protects the earth from harmful sun rays was reduced some 40 percent, and they are not exactly sure what has caused this sudden thinning of a layer that is crucial for earth’s survival.  There is some speculation that strong winds over the North Pole prevented mixture of warmer air, allowing chemical mixtures to destroy ozone molecules.  And there is even more speculation that the urgency of this thinning is also linked to excessive air pollution and is part of global warming. defines the ozone layer as:  “Ozone is a protective atmospheric layer found at around 25 km altitude that acts as a sunlight filter shielding life on Earth from harmful ultraviolet rays, which can harm marine life and increase the risk of skin cancer and cataracts.” The United Nation’s World Meteorological Organization reports that this is a record dropping “ozone hole.” Moreover, that agency’s secretary general, Michel Jarraud, places the cause on people, not nature: “The Arctic stratosphere continues to be vulnerable to ozone destruction caused by ozone-depleting substances linked to human activities.”

An atmospheric chemist who works for the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Earth System  Laboratory, Bryan Johnson called the breaking ozone layer both “sudden and unusual.”  The Associated Press reports that although the world’s nations agreed to stop using chemicals harmful to the Ozone in a 1987 treaty known as The Montreal Protocol, now scientists say that it will take another 20 or 30 years for ozone layers to get back to those 1980s levels.  And this does not even include whatever else of harm to ozone atmospheres that human activity has released since then.

The International Association of Truth Telling Women Journalists, shortly known as IATTWJ, of which I am a member, calls for all believers to get out their Christian prayer books.  It is time for Christians to call upon God’s grace and intervention to again stop the human race from destroying itself.  For if this ozone layer reduces another 40% that is exactly what will happen.  So let’s remember what  the Apostle James tells us:  “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much (James 5: 26).”  So let’s get to it.
