Space Travel: Dangerous for Travelers, Earth and Realms Beyond

Man-in-space        How much will it take for this nation to understand that traveling in space is stupid for so many reasons, including:  1) It greatly endangers the health of astronauts; 2) It could poison space with earth’s most sinister viruses; and 3) It could also bring unknown lethal viruses from space to earth!

Not only experiments with flies sent up in space, but medical records of astronauts prove that space travel damages the health of those who leave this earth to explore the unknown and return.  While the crew of Apollo VII was in space, all three suffered serious head colds, painful ear popping and forms of emotional breakdowns. NASA offered excuses, but none of them ever returned to space.

In his ‘Time Magazine’ article Jeffery Kluger explored that incident in depth. He quotes Dr. Leonard Mermel, infectious disease specialist of Brown University and Rhode Island Hospital: “Two years in a microgravity environment may have profound changes in astronauts and in aggressive microbes, creating a scenario not previously experienced in the history of human space flight.”

In studying the 30 year history of the space shuttle program, Mermel found 29 cases of infectious disease transmission––i.e. fever, and chills; fungal, urinary tract and skin infections; flu-like illnesses and viral gastroenteritis.

And then there is the matter of protecting space with diseases astronauts bring from earth.  As Ian Steadman of wired.co writes: “When searching for life on another world, the most fundamental precaution that any space agency needs to take with any probe or rover is to ensure it doesn’t carry Earth microbes. However, if reports are to be believed, Nasa may have screwed up . . .

“ . . . the possible contamination occurred six months before the rover’s launch in November 2011. Curiosity’s drill bits were designed to be stored in a sealed box, separate from the drill mechanism––however, a Nasa engineer worried that a rough landing might make assembling the drill on Mars impossible (and thus rendering one of the rover’s most important tools impotent), and opened the sealed unit to install one drill bit as a kind of backup.
“This happened without consulting Nasa’s team dedicated to avoiding contaminating Mars with Earth bacteria. space-bug Worried scientists at Nasa now estimate that there may be as many as 250,000 bacterial spores that could have survived both the journey to Mars and the landing.”

Conversely, some scientists admit that scholars have no idea just what spores or microbes space travelers or their ships may bring back to earth.  In ‘Protecting Space from Earth and Protecting Earth from Space,’ the guardians.com proclaims:

“Unless we are extremely careful, we may unwittingly bring unwanted and potentially dangerous life forms back to Earth, when we visit other planets and moons in the Solar System. . . micro-organisms can survive in adverse conditions, including those found in space, possibly for prolonged periods.  Long enough to hitch a ride on a spacecraft returning to Earth from an interplanetary mission.”

That site points out that an unknown type of bacteria has shown up twice in thoroughly washed clean rooms of ships returning to earth: “Only the hardiest of microbes can survive inside a spacecraft clean room, where the air is stringently filtered, the floors are cleansed with certified cleaning agents, and surfaces are wiped with alcohol and hydrogen peroxide, then heated to temperatures high enough to kill almost any living thing.” That bacteria cannot be eliminated!

Before men try to ‘conquer’ space, the secrets, solutions and skills needed to survive on earth should have come first.  Space travel’s extreme expense brings little return to earth’s sufferers.  As God asked Job in well-read used Christian Bibles:  “Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? or hast thou walked in the search of the depth (38: 16)?” If they cannot say ‘yes,’ how can they go elsewhere?
