Global Warming Hot Weeks Against the U.S.––Here Come Mosquitoes

West-Nile-Virus-cycle    Sarah Newsworthy:  Doc, you warned at the end of last month that record-breaking heat in July would probably bring mosquitoes carrying West Nile Virus and other diseases this month.  What is the situation on that now?

Dr. Ad Versery:  Well Sarah that still seems to be case.  But continuing hot weather in some parts of the country in August will explode mosquito populations this fall.  Already most states report rises in West Nile mosquito carriers.

On August 27th, the U.S. Geological Surveys found the West Nile Virus among misquotes in 41 states at the District of Columbia.  A few states had extremely high volume percentages of the disease among the insects tested, including:  California at 1585 carriers, Illinois with 1009, New Jersey 309, and Pennsylvania 729, as compared to low rates in Kansas at 1, or Iowa at 4.

Newsworthy:  But those numbers mean little to states such as Colorado which had 131 illnesses and lost five people to the disease last year.  The Denver Post has reported at least three cases of West Nile Virus this month.

Cities there have already started mosquito control efforts, such as spraying and moving scheduled outdoor activities in-doors.  Surely, officials in other states are also taking precautions.  Paul Tinder writes in VN Daily, 29 states reported cases of West Nine infections at the end of last month, including three deaths.

Dr. Ad Versery:  We don’t know what is going on all the states. But we do know this is serious.  After all, last year West Nile infected mosquitoes brought a record number of 286 deaths out of 5,674 cases in the U.S.

Newsworthy:  Global Warming assures us that very high heat levels will continue long into the fall.  You know what makes no sense to me doc?  Why is there a West Nile vaccine for animals and not one for people?  So what should people do to protect themselves from getting this disease?

Dr. Ad Versery:  As we said last year:  get rid of standing water, including kiddie pools.  Even change bird feeders every preventing-West-Nile-Virusseveral days.  Wear skin covering clothes––i.e. long sleeve shirts and long pants––when going outside, and use insect repellents such as DEET, Picaridin, eucalyptus, geranoil or Oil of Lemon.

Newsworthy: Yes. And avoid going outside at dawn and dusk.  Those are the hours when mosquitoes are most active.  The best advise is just to stay in doors!  And encourage local and state officials to start spraying against the mosquitoes.

Dr. Ad Versery: Also, because of Global Warming––your area of expertise Sarah––it is projected that extreme heat waves will increase by 5% a year, scheduled to double by 2020 and quadruple by 2040.  Many people will not be able to live in that kind of heat.  It is urgent that Christians start praying about this.

Newsworthy:  You are right.  It would also help if nations start taking serious steps against Global Warming.  As our online Bible lessons teach national leaders:  “Be thou prepared, and prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee, and be thou a guard unto them (Ezekiel 28: 7).”  Those leaders denying Global Warming are not guarding the people under their charge!
