Shaking Quake Swarms, Volcanoes and Science Doesn’t Know?

Scientists claim to be baffled about hundreds of earthquake swarms––and in some cases full quakes––pelting Southern California in the last few days, which certainly doesn’t give ease to citizens living with damages from the shakings.

According to Elizabeth Cochran, geophysicist for the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), more than 400 earthquakes or swarms greater than 1.0 in magnitude have hit Imperial County, California, this week.  The largest were 5.3 and 5.5 in magnitude.

The virulent tremors have caused the town of Brawley in Imperial County to declare a state of emergency after rattling swarms knocked some 20 mobile homes off their blocks, forced the National Beef slaughterhouse to close, damaged the local high school, and brought millions in losses to businesses from closures.

Brawley mayor, George Nava, said he took the unusual step to ask for emergency help from the county and state.  Hundreds of swarms lasting for days have brought millions of dollars worth of damage to his region.  Residents from unlivable mobile home, and others suffering without electrical power, air conditioning or running water are staying with the Red Cross.

While Jeanne Hardebeck, USGS research seismologist, insists that these continuing swarms are not a sign that more damaging quakes are imminent, other geologists are not so sure.

Scientists do know that these quake tremors come from water and other fluids moving around in the Earth’s crust.  And swarms are known to evoke volcanic eruptions.  Another USGS scientists, Julie Dutton, admits:  “In volcanically active areas, earthquake swarms often indicate imminent eruptions.”

But Eli MacKinnon from livescience.com concludes:  “The only potential candidates for volcanic eruptions near Brawley are the Salton Buttes, five small lava domes that flank the Salton Sea and haven’t erupted in close to 10,000 years.”     Cochran explains that to the south of the Salton Sea, the earth’s Pacific plate and North American plate pull away from each other creating the Gulf of California separating Baja California from Mexico.  And Imperial County is caught in the center of the split in what is called the Brawley Seismic Zone.

But what Cochran and other scientists won’t openly admit is that even volcanoes that haven’t erupted in eons can wake up again, just as the long-sleeping Little Sitkin volcano in Alaska’s Aleutian Islands was re-awakened just TODAY by a swarm of small earthquakes.  Sound familiar?

It is time for man and science to acknowledge that only Almighty God knows everything about how earth works, because He made it, as well as the people who live upon it.  A favorite Psalm in the best Bible verse cards is Psalm 24: 1, “The earth is the LORD’S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.”  It is past time for mankind to look to Him for answers––i.e. as in the ‘science’ of prayer!
