Too Much Dry & Too Much Wet: More Whacky Weather Coming!

cold-weather-experiments-to-keep-you-entertained-during-the-polar-vortex    The Polar Vortex has once again escaped out of the North Pole to visit below-freezing cold and snow to the mid-West and Northwest U.S., while at the same time California’s drought could use some of that Vortex’s water.

Long term economic effects of these extremely cold temperatures are so far uncalculated, but agricultural scientists express fear that California, as the source for much of the food in this country, and the world, is severely threatened.

Lindsay Abrams of Salon.com attests: “The year 2013 was California’s driest on record, featuring the least rainfall since the state started keeping track in 1849. And so far, 2014 is off to a bad start.  A full 63 percent of the state is in extreme drought conditions, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor—up from 23 percent just last week and extending into northwestern Nevada.

Water levels in mountain snowpacks, reservoirs, and rivers are down upwards to 40%.  “It’s really serious,” California Gov. Jerry Brown warned. “In many ways it’s a mega-drought; it’s been going on for a number of years.”

He has declared the state in a major drought disaster and applied for federal aide.  Haeyoun Park writes for The New York Times:  “Signs of drought are everywhere, affecting vast sectors of the economy. A sense of dread is building among farmers, many whom have already let fields go fallow.

“Without more water, an estimated 200,000 acres of prime agriculture land will go unplanted . . . Cattle ranchers drought1accustomed to letting cows graze on rain-fed grass . . . rely on bought hay or reduce their herds.”  And the lack of rain brings wild forest fires to the state in January––fires they don’t expect until August.

California churches have resorted to prayer for rain. Park reports:  “Clergy of all faiths have been exhorting the faithful to pray for precipitation. ‘May God open the heavens, and let his mercy rain down upon our fields and mountains.’” Requests for God’s intervention include Protestants, Jews, Catholics and Muslims.

Downplaying Polar Vortex, Chris Dolce of Weather.com admits:  “This next blast of Arctic air will push southward across the Canadian border and into Upper Midwest, Great Lakes and the interior Northeast Sunday night through Monday.  Tuesday through Thursday, this cold air mass will anchor from the Northern Plains to the Upper Mississippi Valley, Great Lakes, Ohio Valley and Northeast.

“These regions that will see temperatures 10 to 25 degrees below average,  during the coldest time of year.  Parts of Southeast will also see temperatures, 5 to 15 degrees below average Tuesday through Friday, . . . 20 degrees below the norm on Thursday.”  Thus he predicts lows of -23º in Minneapolis, -16º in Chicago, -12º in Albany. In the Midwest, New York and New England subzero will be the norm.

Leviticus 26 in wholesale Christian Bibles records God’s conditions for weather blessings:  “If ye walk in my statutes, and keep my commandments, and do them; Then I will give you rain in due season, and the land shall yield her increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit.” If conditions are not met:

“But if ye will not hearken unto me, and will not do all these commandments; . . . your land shall not yield her increase, neither shall . . .the land yield their fruits (2-4, 20).” To send the rain and stop the ice takes true repentance!
