No Hamburger or Veggies This Holiday? Major Threats of E. Coli!

chorizo-y-papas-burger-2-1050x700The tainted food summer-saga has started early this year. A minor internet story exploded onto major media outlets this week: 1.8 million pounds of ground beef, as well as raw clover spouts and mushrooms, slither with E.coli infections.

When the smaller story first broke, it was assumed that the poisoned hamburger from Wolverine Packing Company in Detroit, Michigan, was only distributed to restaurants in that state and Massachusetts, Missouri and Ohio. But investigators found that food brokers have distributed that meat across the country.

As Samantha Bonar of L.A. Weekly reveals, this particular E.coli strain is the most dangerous: “The ground beef is potentially contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, the nastiest strain of the bacteria, which can lead to deadly kidney failure, particularly in children and the elderly.

“The FSIS ranks this a Class I, ‘high health risk’ recall,  which means, this is a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.”

Caroline Smith DeWaal, Director of Food Safety for the Center for Science in the Public Interest, told NBC News: “It’s infrequent that we have a major outbreak from E. coli these days but when it happens, it’s very serious, and it can land quite a number of its victims in the hospital.”

According to CNN, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported “Seven confirmed and three likely cases of E. coli infection linked to raw clover sprouts” in Idaho and Washington State.  Half are hospitalized.

CDC confirmed the raw clover sprouts come from Evergreen Fresh Sprouts LLC of Idaho, while some 14, 860 pounds of hummus and dip products came from Lansal, Inc. of Texas, and some bulk and packaged walnuts come from Recalled WalnutsSherman Produce. None of these products should be eaten for any reason!

Officials have pulled the products as precautionary steps aimed at guarding against possible “Listeria monocytogenes, which can cause serious or possible fatal infections in people with weakened immune systems.

Escherichia coli include a large batch of bacteria. The strain in the raw sprouts is Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli O121.  These infections can cause severe diarrhea, stomach pain and vomiting.  Hopefully, recovery comes within seven days, but in stronger complications kidney failure, pregnancy miscarriage, stillbirth, or serious infections in newborn babies can result.

CNN adds: “Symptoms of a Listeria infection in an otherwise healthy person include fever, muscle aches, stiff neck, headache, loss of balance and convulsions.”
This is the largest food-borne bacteria outbreak since the summer of 2008, when 7 million pounds of meat from Nebraska Beef were pulled and 79 were sickened.

Texas health officials included recall of: “Target Archer Farms hummus products nationwide. Certain Giant Eagle hummus products in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio and Maryland; 8-ounce container of Trader Joe’s Edamame Hummus is recalled in 17 states with use-by dates of April 28, April 29 and May 9; and containers of Tryst Yellow Lentil Hummus with Sunflower Seeds & Apricots.”
