Dog Treats From China Still Killing America’s Pets

dog-treats-China    Dr. Butterman:  This week scientists at the Federal Drug and Administration admitted that they still don’t know how dog treats imported from China are killing America’s pets.  The Animal Kids here are furious that nothing is being done.

Lucy Lip:  “Furious” ain’t the word Pop. if you adults don’t do something about this pronto, we kids with animals and our friends are going on strike!  Why are these pet foods still coming here from China anyway?  That’s super stupid!

John J., Jr.: Please forgive her Dr. Butterman.  But she does speak for all the kids. It is sometimes difficult for me to contain them. They only calm down when Rev. Repriestly is there to counsel and teach them and to pray with them.

Dr. Butterman:  Brady Dennis reveals a few days ago in ‘Mystery of Pet Deaths Related to Jerky Treats Made in China Continues to Stump FDA,’ that officials know this disease is “Fanconi syndrome, a rare, often fatal illness that affects the kidneys.” They suspect it comes from chicken pet treats from China.

And these killer pet treats have been known for years.  Dennis writes: “Since 2007, when the FDA warned of an apparent link between jerky treats and sick and dying dogs, agency officials have spent countless hours trying to nail down what might be behind the illnesses, with little success.”

Dennis explains:  “Officials said there’s no clear pattern based on breed or geography—pets have been sickened in every state, as well as in countries such as Australia—and the problems don’t seem specific to any particular brand.”

Agency spokesmen say: “Until the agency is able to zero in on a specific toxin, officials say, it can do little more than warn people about the potential dangers of jerky treats. Unless a contaminant is detected and we have evidence that a product is adulterated, we are limited in what regulatory actions we can take.”

John J., Jr.:  But get this: when China first exported this mess here in 2003, it was only a million pounds a year.  By 2011 it was 86 million pounds.  God only knows how much is coming here now and is hawked on T.V. for people to buy.

Lucy Lip:  Yeah and since then this garbage has killed 600 dogs and cats, and made 3,600 more sick. That’s what vets told FDA anyway.  And all because these jerky companies sell stuff made from chicken, duck, sweet potato and some fruit-flavored stuff. Arghh. If it were any other country, that junk would be banned.

John J., Jr.: She’s right doc.  Last year, Huffington Post reported that in New York state jerky treats were pulled jerky-211x300 (2)after a “lab found trace amounts of six types of antibiotics in chicken jerky treats made in China.” Five of those antibiotics are banned in this country.  So once this is known, why keep bring that stuff over here?

Dr. Butterman:  Well, in that regard, recommends that people start petitioning major food chains––i.e. Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club, Target, Costco, Safeway, etc.––to take pet treats off their shelves.  “FDA has had over 2200 complaints of poisoning and the manufacturers refuse to act . . .”

So, as wholesale Christian kids t-shirts say, it is in times like these that we must remember to pray and follow God’s Word.  He cares about our pets just as He cares about us: “For thus saith The LORD, Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, that ye may drink, both ye, and your cattle, and your beasts (2 Kings 3; 17).”
