More Than Wacky Icy Snowy Weather: H1N1 Swine Flu Sweeping U.S.

frozen-bicycles        Wendy Weathersbee:  Whether main stream forecasters want to admit it or not, this country is going through the other polar end of Global Warming: Continuous flows of freezing Arctic air, snow and ice cover through most of the U.S. as our nation struggles to survive in sub-zero temperatures.

Just as America’s summers have grown incredibly hot, with much shorter springs and autumns, now our winters are also unbelievably and seemingly endlessly cold. As writes: “ . . . a wide swath of the country is still in the deep freeze, with wind chills in the teens and single digits across much of the Plains, the Southwest and the Northwest.

“Frigid temperatures like these are . . . used to refute the idea that the planet as a whole is getting warmer each passing year. That’s just not so, say NASA scientists, who point out that even on a warming planet, bitterly cold temperatures and harsh winter weather will still be possible and even commonplace.”

NASA claims that Arctic Oscillation, causing interaction of the jet stream when bitterly cold temperatures occur even in years of the hottest summers.  “This bitterly cold air even can make it too cold to snow across regions of the country that normally see double-digit snowfall amounts each year.”  Moreover, this weather affects transportation, and will, no doubt, hurt the economy.

Doctor Ad Versary: Exactly. Lost work hours.  And such harsh winters usher in drastic flu seasons. Lisa Schnirring of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy writes:  “Nearly half of US states are reporting widespread flu activity, driven by the 2009 H1N1 virus, which is taking a toll on younger children and working-age adults, according to the latest surveillance and media reports.”

Further she writes this week:  “The percentage of respiratory samples that tested positive for flu also rose again, symptoms-swine-fluweighing in at 26.7%, up from 24.1% the previous week, the CDC said. About 97% of the viruses were influenza A, and of those sub-typed, nearly all (99.2%) were the 2009 H1N1 virus.”  Hospitalization rates for flu cases, as well as deaths from this disease, are up as well.

Marina Lopes, reporting for Reuters, adds: “Thousands of people die every year from flu, which peaks in the United States between October and March. The flu is spreading quickly this season, with 25 states already reporting cases.

Dr. Joe Bresee, Chief of Epidemiology and Prevention in the Influenza Division, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), told Ms. Lopes:
“We are seeing a big uptick in disease in the past couple of weeks. The virus is all around the United States right now.” People should not be under illusion: the H1N1 Virus is simply Swine Flu.  And we have been battling this virus for years.

So far CDC has not mentioned total number of deaths in the U.S. but we do know it has killed six children here this season, and this current round of flu has killed some 25 patients in Texas where the disease is wide spread. Of course, Dr. Bresee advocates that Americans of all ages get flu shots as soon as possible.

Wendy:  So whether we pray to survive bitter cold or sickening flu, the important thing is that we pray.  As Apostle Paul writes to a young pastor in wholesale Christian Bibles:  “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men (1 Timothy 2: 1).”  So let us pray against enemies of death and destruction in our nation and the world!
