2013: The Worst Year For Man-Made Global Warming

Global-Warming-Dont-Wait    The year 2013 may not seem like the worst for Global Warming records, but in reality it is!  While  the staff will go through each 2013 month in another blog, it is essential to point out this year’s dismal record for making the planet sicker.

For one thing, despite all the warnings about its dangers to Earth, CO2 emission levels from fossil fuels passed 400 parts per million in mid-2013, and the numbers keep rising.  Science Daily advises that carbon dioxide from fossil fuels rose 2.1% this year, 61% above 1990 levels set by Kyoto Protocol:

“The Global Carbon Budget reveals that the biggest contributors to fossil fuel emissions in 2012 were China (27 per cent), the United States (14 per cent), the European Union (10 per cent), and India (6 per cent). The projected rise for 2013 comes after a similar rise of 2.2 per cent in 2012.

“Most emissions are from coal (43 per cent), then oil (33 per cent), gas (18 per cent), cement (5.3 per cent) and gas flaring (0.6 per cent). The growth in coal in 2012 accounted for 54 per cent of the growth in fossil fuel emissions.”

In addition, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concluded last fall that scientists are ‘more than ever’ sure that, through greenhouse gas emissions, people cause Global Warming, and it is getting worse.

As Think points out, the world was much hotter in 2013: “Sea level rise is speeding up, dry areas are getting drier and we areas are getting wetter as the warmer atmosphere holds more moisture in it. . . . The oceans are taking up greater and greater amounts of carbon dioxide, which portends acidified doom for many shelled aquatic creatures and anything that relies on them.”

Their oceanographers also highlight that jelly fish populations around the world have exploded:  “One Oregon fisherman says his boat has caught 4,000 [to]5,000 pounds of jellyfish.”  Also, Think Progress reinforces their scientists’ conclusions that “the oceans are still on the brink of collapse due to overfishing; and spills of various kinds [have] killed thousands of fish and animals this year.”

Any reports about air quality, wild fire destruction, methane emissions, animal extinctions, storm survivors––all say the same thing: Global Warming accelerates its record of destroying Earth, man’s only home.

People take pride in 2013 because 2012 was declared the hottest year ever.  But this year gives no reason for such Typhoon-Haiyan-damageeffusion.  While the hurricane season seems to be the lowest rate in 60 years, last month’s Typhoon Haiyan––the strongest storm ever to hit landfall––wipes out that record.

Those who have warned about Global Warming for years lose hope that world leaders even care.  We look at Australia where the prime minister insists that record fires and drought there have nothing to do with Climate Change; or we screech at China, a nation burning enough fossil fuel to kill millions of people.

But few listen.  As Christian messages repeatedly exhorts:  “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction (Proverbs 1: 7).” After Hurricane Sandy decimated America’s East Coast, and now, after Typhoon Haiyan has killed––at last count––6,000 people, world leaders should prove whether they want to be remembered as wise men or fools.
