One Year After Japan’s Quake: A Warning to the World, Part 2

March 13, 2012

Amidst claims that Japan is a safe place for its citizens, centuries-old traditions of humble submission to their rulers’ wishes have ended.  Some citizens are marching to stop government and business from restarting nuclear power.         Others have filed a law suit to stop the restart of nuclear reactors.  Still other victims are working to leave Japan as soon as possible.  All the Japanese people seem to be angry, and very untrusting of the government’s claims, and of its “joint to the hip” business partner, TEPCO, operator of the failed nuclear power system.

This weekend, at least 45,000 people held a rally near the damaged Fukushima plant and demanded an end to all nuclear power in the country.  Another group of thousands march marched in Osaka.  Marchers want the nation’s leaders to completely ban nuclear power, and they don’t want them or corporate owners of nuclear energy to transfer their apparent ineptitudes to other nations.

Also, some 259 citizens filed a lawsuit in Osaka District Court asking for an injunction to block the restart of Reactors No. 3 and No. 4 at Kansai Electric’s Oi nuclear power plant in the central Fukui Prefecture.   The group argues: “The Oi plant is near active faults and some experts say the plants’ quake resistance is not sufficient.”  At this point only two of Japan’s 54 reactors are up and running.

Nagato Tsuboi, who pastors a group of people who lived in Fukushima just got back from South Korea where, according to AFP News, he was shopping for a safe place for his parishioners “where their children could live with no fears of radiation.”  Of course, to politicians in Japan, Tsuboi is considered an activist.

Real estate dealers in Jangsu, the southwestern region of  South Korea, said of Tsuboi, “He came with several South Korean estate developers and said he was looking to buy land at a place similar to Fukushima, like our county and Jeju.”  With its emphasis on rice growing and livestock farming, the South Korean area is quite similar to the Fukushima farm land.

Marchers dispute the Japanese government’s claim that if nuclear systems are not restarted, there will be an energy short fall this summer.  Aileen Mioko Smith, executive director of the Green Action environmental group told The Telegraph News Service:  “Since the disasters, people have realized that they are not completely in control of their lives.  They have realized that the trust they had in Japanese technology and the belief that nuclear power was safe is just not true.”

What’s worse is that scientists now strongly warn Japanese officials that an even stronger earthquake may hit that island in the near future.  If there ever was a time for a nation to fall upon its knees asking for God’s grace and mercy, now is that time for Japan.  In Christian messages, God says:  “And ye shall seek Me, and find Me, when ye shall search for Me with all your heart (Jeremiah 29: 13).”

One Year After Japan’s Quake and Tsunami: A Warning to the World

posted by Shopping4Bargains @ 17:14 PM
March 9, 2012

On this one year anniversary of Japan’s disaster, the impact of the earthquake and tsunami still rocks the nation to its core.  With the $ 210 billion dollars paid out in insurance loses, most funds have not gone to homeless citizens.  Some towns no longer exist at all, but victims still yearn for them as “home.”

Monks openly mourn some 16,000 known dead, and the more than 3,000 still listed as missing.   Some victims plan to leave the country altogether, and scientists warn that another “big” quake could hit the nation soon.

AFP News reports: “Twelve months on from the disaster, few have received the compensation payouts . . . from plant operator Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO), . . . Pitted against the sometimes fearsome power of the company, refugees say they feel helpless, with one describing the battle for compensation as akin to ‘ants trying to tackle an elephant’.”

Protected by its strong arm inside Japan’s government, TEPCO has only paid 13 of the 1,000 cases ‘now’ awaiting payment.  Some two million people are expected to file for compensation.  Although it promised victims $ 1,500 a month, TEPCO now requires re-application every three months on very long claim forms.

One lawyer argues, “These evacuees need cash to live off now.  Their problem is how long the money will last for their daily life. TEPCO has shown no consideration for their desperate living conditions.”

As the rest of the world watches, people must consider what happens when such disasters hit their shores.  The Independent, from England’s Guardian Newspaper, quotes “a report from Maplecroft, the global risk analysts, that of the 422 nuclear power stations in the world, more than one in ten are situated in places that are deemed to be at high or extreme risk from tsunamis [and/]or earthquakes.”

Helen Hodge, Maplecroft’s spokesperson says:  ”Although Japanese nuclear facilities are particularly exposed, other countries could also face similar risks. South Korea, Taiwan, southern China, India, Pakistan and the west coast of the United States have operating or planned nuclear facilities on tsunami-exposed coastlines, while nuclear sites in areas of high or extreme risk of earthquakes can be found in western U.S., Taiwan, Armenia, Iran and Slovenia.”

More on the Japanese pastor who plans to move all of his congregation to South Korea , and on Japanese citizens, once in the middle class, now struggling in poverty, in the next blog.  Clearly, TEPCO and the Japanese government have let them down.  For centuries, used Christian books have pointed to the Bible to show that such mistreatment of citizens reaps God’s judgement.  For instance, Isaiah 9: 16 says:  “For the leaders of this people cause them to err; and they that are led of them are destroyed.”  Hopefully, leaders of threatened nations plan to do better.

Japan Was Unprepared For Nuclear Disaster––Is the U.S.?

posted by admin @ 13:08 PM
March 8, 2012

A report coming out on the one-year anniversary of Japan’s nuclear disaster makes the astounding claim that Japan was completely unprepared for the earthquake and tsunami that debilitated its energy system and the nation.

How is this possible?  How can such an economically developed nation, handling the most dangerous source of power on earth, not be ready for natural disaster––especially when it is in a geographical area prone to earthquakes?

Findings of an independent investigative panel, initiated by The Rebuild Japan Initiative Foundation, and published this month in the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, reveal that the Japanese government, the Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco), and important related agencies––were all asleep at the switch!

According to Machines Like Us.com, and Sage Journals, in http://online.sagepub.com/, the investigation even reveals that “the tsunami could and should have been anticipated.”  But everyone officially ignored these possibilities.

Knowing that historically the same high water marks had been reached near the Fukushima plant, Tepco dismissed the probabilities as “academic.”  While those histories should have been part of final decision-making, the government had not made full disclosure mandatory.  So scientists aware of history were silenced.

Moreover, the plants should never have been built so close together, and the emergency cooling systems had never been tested.  When plant workers turned to operation manuals to find out how to cope with simultaneous melt-downs––nothing was in the book.  And these are just a few of Tepco’s crucial failures!

Of course, the Japanese government had many agencies–– the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (NISA), and the Nuclear Safety Commission (NSC)––that responded too slowly to these meltdowns.  And it had another “fool-proof” back-up agency to insure population protection–– System for Prediction of Environmental Emergency Dose Information (SPEEDI)––but no one used it.

Sadly, the report concludes:  “It’s clear from our investigation of the Fukushima Daiichi accident that even in the technologically advanced country of Japan, the government and the plant operator, Tokyo Electric Power Company, were astonishingly unprepared, at almost all levels, for the complex nuclear disaster that started with an earthquake and a tsunami.  And this grave oversight will affect the Japanese people for decades.”

During this election season in the United States, when politicians mention the need for more nuclear energy, the American people must ask about this country’s preparedness for nuclear catastrophe.  In wholesale Christian Bibles, Ezekiel counsels:  “Be thou prepared, and prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee, and be thou a guard unto them (38: 7). God holds America’s leaders responsible for this nation’s nuclear safety!

Global Warming, Melting Ice, Soot, and Acidification, Part 3

posted by Sarah N Worthy IATTWJ Member @ 17:42 PM
March 7, 2012

One more issue on the increasingly dire impact of the modern industrial revolution on the world’s oceans:  acidification!  According to an international team of researchers, ocean acidification from human carbon emissions is at the worse point in 300 million years.  And again, the culprit is Global Warming.

Reporting on the findings of that international team, AFP News writes that oceans are more vulnerable to Global Warming now “because they soak up excess carbon dioxide from the air which turns the waters more acidic, a state that can kill corals, mollusks and other forms of reef and shell organisms.”

Also speaking on the research team’s report, SPX News says:  “The oceans act like a sponge to draw down excess carbon dioxide from the air; the gas reacts with seawater to form carbonic acid, which over time is neutralized by fossil carbonate shells on the seafloor.”

But Global Warming rushing CO2 into oceans, depletes the carbonate ions that corals, mollusks and some plankton need for reef and shell-building.  In fact, from their studies of paleoceanographic reports, including fossils on the sea bed, the team made up of scientists from the United States, Britain, Spain, Germany and the Netherlands, determined that “the current rate of ocean acidification is at least 10 times faster than it was 56 million years ago.”

Barbel Honisch, a paleoceanographer at Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, lead author of the team’s report, compares ocean acidification eons ago to what is happening today:  “We know that life during past ocean acidification events was not wiped out — new species evolved to replace those that died off.  But if industrial carbon emissions continue at the current pace, we may lose organisms we care about — coral reefs, oysters, salmon.”

Andy Ridgwell of Bristol University, co-author of the research team’s report adds:  “The geological record suggests that the current acidification is potentially unparalleled in at least the last 300 million years of Earth history, and raises the possibility that we are entering an unknown territory of marine ecosystem change.”

Richard Feely, oceanographer at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, says of the reports: “These studies give you a sense of the timing involved in past ocean acidification events––[they] have significant implications.”

Thus, it is clear that, just as man’s greed continues to kill animals on earth through poaching, land encroachment, species transfers, etc., man’s greed also affects the ocean through Global Warming.  But, whether on land or in the seas, these animals are protected by covenant with God:  “Let the heaven and earth praise him, the seas, and every thing that moveth therein (Psalm 69: 34).”  And Bible prophecies promise God’s judgment on those who destroy sea life!

A Sad Start of What Will Be An Unbelievably Awful Tornado Season

posted by Sarah N Worthy IATTWJ Member @ 11:09 AM
March 6, 2012

If Global Warming is battling Europe and the Middle East with the harshest winter weather on record, and also bringing the worse flooding in decades to Australia and her neighbors––then the United States had best prepare for a tornado season that even breaks last year’s record-breaking tornado season.

In commenting on this strange start of the tornado season, AFP News writes: “Some 545 people were killed by tornadoes in 2011, the deadliest season since 1936 and the third worst on record. This year tornadoes have come early with the mild winter creating the conditions for cold fronts to slam into warmer air.”

As major media has fully reported, two deadly tornadoes in a three day period hit the mid-west last week. These storms killed at least 38 people, left hundreds wounded and thousands of homes and businesses destroyed.

Jim Suhr of the Associated Press stresses the magnitude of these storms that selectively ripped through entire towns in a snap: “Massive thunderstorms, predicted by forecasters for days, threw off dozens of tornadoes as they raced Friday from the Gulf Coast to the Great Lakes. Twisters that crushed entire blocks of homes knocked out cellphones and landlines alike, ripped power lines from broken poles and tossed cars, school buses and tractor-trailers onto roadways made impassable by debris.”

This is a time when all of America can help. Common Cents at commoncts.blogspot.com lists the following charities operating in affected states where gifts can help tornado victims, including: Catholic Charities, The Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, and Food for the Poor.

Also, philanthropynewyork.org includes: Bank of America Charitable Foundation, AmeriCares, Direct Relief International, Samaritan’s Purse, United Way of West Alabama, Save the Children and The Salvation Army.

Otherwise, citizens must keep pressure on federal and state governments to Stop Global Warming. How much more killer weather–-tornadoes, snow storms, droughts, hurricanes and floods, etc.–-does the world have to go through before our leaders get serious about Global Warming? As Christian prayer books point out, the most important prayer we can pray is asking God to forgive: “But there is forgiveness with Thee, that Thou mayest be feared (Psalms 130: 4).”

Illustrating how devastating these storms were, fifty-four year old Susie Renner said, “I’m a storm chaser, and I have never been this frightened before.” Of course, the National Guard is out in several states; federal and state Emergency Management officials are trying to assess damages; and citizens are rummaging through belongings scattered everywhere, trying to save what they can.

Global Warming, Melting Ice & Deadly Sooted Water, Part 2

posted by Sarah N Worthy IATTWJ Member @ 15:08 PM
March 2, 2012

Not only have two centuries of man’s industrial revolution eventually led to Global Warming and Climate Change, now melting glaciers are returning carbon poisons from that revolution back into the oceans and air of the Earth.

Reporting from the Woods Hole Research Center in Massachusetts, SPX News writes:  “Globally, glacier ice loss is accelerating, driven in part by the deposition of carbon in the form of soot or ‘black carbon,’ which darkens glacier surfaces and increases their absorption of light and heat.”  Thus, even more heat!

Moreover, the relatively new practice of “deforestation” that real estate developers and industrial agriculturalists use to clear massive tracts of lands have added major sources of black carbon to the atmosphere, as well as has other huge fires or burning of biomass (trees, leaves and other vegetation).

Such burnings now take place around the globe, especially in areas of Africa, Latin America and Asia, where Western industrialists and China want to eliminate natural land masses as quickly as possible.  At the same time, locations suffering from continuing drought––such as swathes of Texas––eventually lead to ‘endless’ fires that again deposit carbon soot into the atmosphere.

Such findings from a scientific study group, headed by Robert Spencer from Woods Hole Research Center, are to be published in this month’s issue of ‘Nature Geoscience.’  Much of their work was carried out at the Mendenhall Glacier near Juneau, Alaska.   This area in the Gulf of Alaska gets a high rate of rain and snow, which returns deposits of black carbon soot gathered from around the Earth.

While some scientists believe that the source of this carbon matter dates back to “ancient forests and peatlands overrun by the glaciers,” radiocarbon dating and “ultra-high resolution mass spectrometry,” prove that this soot comes from today’s sources of Global Warming––i.e. burning of fossil fuels and biomass.

Eventually, the carbon soot, along with any germ-filled organic matters within it, moves downstream through melted water and enters food cycles for animals and men.  Thus, Spencer explains:  “Improving our understanding of glacier biogeochemistry is of great urgency, as glacier environments are among the most sensitive to Climate Change and the effects of industrial pollution.”

Obviously then, Global Warming and Climate Change now poisons the air and water.  Those poisons kill millions of people.  But the deaths are attributed to asthma, cancer or some other malady, when in fact, mankind is killing himself.

A few knowledgeable scholars have questioned the new inventions of this modern age.  As Bible prophecies promise:  “The foolishness of man perverteth his way: and his heart fretteth against The LORD (Proverbs 19:3).” But warring against  an omnipotent God, and the simpler life He had planned for man, is unwinnable!

Global Warming Melting Adds 230 Billion Tons of ‘New’ Water Yearly

posted by Sarah N Worthy IATTWJ Member @ 10:43 AM
March 1, 2012

Now that satellites are available to measure the amount of ice that is dangerously melting into oceans around the world––some scientists are alarmed.  Moreover, other scientists are also warning that those same oceans are not only overladen with water, but that their waters are getting hotter.

Seven years of satellite measurements (2003 to 2010) from GRACE (the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment) indicate that every year glaciers and ice caps, along with Greenland and Antarctica, around the world lose 150 billion tons––i.e. 39 cubic miles––of ice.  Another 80 billion in ice loss comes from the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets.

Dr. John Wahr, lead researcher of the study conducted at the University of Colorado, explains that these satellite measurements indicate the melting ice “pose the greatest threat to sea level increases in the future.”  He adds that “The total amount of ice lost to Earth’s oceans from 2003 to 2010 would cover the entire United States in about one and one-half feet of water.”

SPX News Service reports:  “The vast majority of climate scientists agree that human activities like pumping huge amounts of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is warming the planet, an effect that is most pronounced in the polar regions.”  A paper from the study is published in this month’s ‘Nature Journal.’

Under the title, “Ocean Warming Has Accelerated the Past 100 Years,” the blog, machines like us.com, published results from a study by oceanographers Ping Chang and Benjamin Giese at Texas A & M University.  They were joined by researchers at Ocean University of China, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the University of Hawaii, the University of Colorado, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, the University of Tokyo, and scientists in Germany and Australia.  Their results are published in the journal ‘Nature Climate Science.’

This world-wide team concludes “that parts of the world’s oceans are warming at an accelerated rate, showing a global warming ‘signature’ in the ocean.”  They found that in some ocean regions the warming trend is twice as high as the warming average around the world.

Dr. Chang estimates:  “If this trend continues, it could have a potential impact on the occurrence of extreme climate events, such as winter storms, in these regions because the atmospheric circulation is affected by sea-surface temperatures.”  Such changes would naturally affect marine ecosystems, he adds.

Increasing warmth on earth indicates what Bible prophecies call final end-time judgment:  “But the day of The LORD will come as a thief in the night; in the which the . . . . the elements shall melt with fervent heat . . . (2 Peter 3: 10).”  World leaders must do everything possible to stop Global Warming!
