Rising Sea Levels, Failing Shores and Heads in Global Sands

In the last Good News Friday segment, this blog quoted business people and local bureaucrats, as they dismissed politicians who deny Global Warming as well as rising sea levels, said in effect, “This has nothing to do with politics, the ocean is rising and shore lines are being washed away before our eyes.”  Especially on the East Coast of the United States, land owners are using imported sand to reinforce shore lines.  Ocean scientists report that rising sea levels will not only affect those living along coast lines, but those who live inland as well.

In their report “Coastal Zones and Sea Level Rise,” the Environmental Protection Agency explains:  “Coastal zones are particularly vulnerable to climate variability and change. Key concerns include sea level rise, land loss, changes in maritime storms and flooding, responses to sea level rise and implications for water resources.”  EPA scientists state further of other vulnerabilities:  “Rising sea levels inundate wetlands and other low-lying lands, erode beaches, intensify flooding, and increase the salinity of rivers, bays, and groundwater tables. . . .  Coastal wetland ecosystems, such as salt marshes and mangroves are particularly vulnerable . . .”
Increasing ocean levels soon affect everyone’s water.  As the report states,“Rising sea level increases the salinity of both surface water and ground water through salt water intrusion.”  The problem now on both the East and West Coasts, as rising sea levels push salty waters inland, especially during drought seasons, fresh water from rivers near ocean waters are increasingly infused with salt.  However, water managers usually release fresh water from reservoirs into water systems during dry seasons.  The problem now is that less water is being stored from shorter wet seasons and drought seasons are much longer.

Of course, increasing storms and melting glaciers, especially in the polar regions––caused by Global Warming (i.e.  climate change)––are the the major causes for rising sea levels.  In their coming series, “Earth Under Water,” National Geographic Channel asserts, “Miami, New Orleans and New York City completely under water it’s a very real possibility if sea levels continue to rise. In Earth Under Water we’ll see these events unfold as leading experts forecast how mankind will be impacted if Global Warming continues.”  But, alas, political leaders in the United States, and around the world, continue to poke their heads in the sands of ever-eroding shores pretending to deny that Global Warming even exists.

The Apostle John ends the Book of Revelation with a prayer, “He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus (22: 20).” Christians should ever keep this prayer before God’s throne.  For if The Lord’s Return does not shorten these days of earth’s decline, feigned ignorance and outrageous arrogance will allow Global Warming to destroy all life on earth!
