Can’t Or Won’t Discern The Signs of The Times

One must wonder what will it take for world leaders to admit that something unusually drastic is taking place in the earth, and there is a very limited time when they may be able to do something about it! The drastic occurrence: volcanoes are erupting around the earth. Some of them have not spouted for thousands of years. They seem to be connected to earthquakes, fault lines and each occurrence seems to have the ability to provoke other disturbances in the chain. While they concentrate on Congressional internet sex scandals, one among several local child murders, and political primaries more than 14 months away––media refuses to trace continuance of volcanoes disrupting plane flights, relocating citizens, affecting climate change and causing havoc in nations thousands of miles away.

In this year alone, volcanoes are and have been erupting in Japan, Iceland, North Korea, Chile, Eritrea in northeast  Africa (and other parts of the Southern Red Sea region), Indonesia, Mexico, the Philippines, Italy, Costa Rica, and the United States (in Hawaii). The vast majority of these quakes have been quiet for fifty years or more; and one of the most violent ones in Chili had been dormant for 9,000 years. In most of these countries, “red alerts” were issued and people were moved away from lava activities, and for some, it is unclear that they will ever be able to return to their homes. Moreover, in several areas, the shape of a nation’s land mass, and of the earth itself, was changed as a result of the volcanic eruptions or accompanying earthquakes. In addition, several eruptions were accompanied by multiple uncommonly violent lighting bolts rippling far up into the heavens.

It is of further interest that––while governments have invested billions of national treasures to find out what is going on at the moon and stars––there has been little done on investigating the earth itself. One must wonder why these “leaders” think that the surface of the moon is of such importance, while that of the earth is not. Scientists don’t know why and how volcanoes are connected to one another, or to earthquakes, air temperatures and the earth’s environment. Moreover, they know even less as to what causes them to erupt. But something is disturbing the earth. There is a reason that these volcanoes are waking up so violently. And no one in charge seems disturbed enough to ask why.

In Bible prophecies, The Lord Jesus castigates religious leaders because, while they seemed to be able to look at the clouds to determine weather patterns, they did not know what times they were living in, or Who they were dealing with: “And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?” (Matthew 16: 3). Today, what seems to be applicable to political, scientific, media and religious leaders, is that none even discerns the face of the skies, or of earth’s awakening volcanoes as the signs of these times.

When he was castigating the religious leaders during His time on earth, Jesus said that they were either ignorant or in denial about all the signs of God’s pending judgments all around them: “The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired him that he would shew them a sign from heaven. He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red. And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not [discern] the signs of the times? (Matthew 16: 1 – 3).

To Green or Not to Green: That Is The Question!

posted by Jael Ever @ 19:24 PM

Just as the Japanese government insists on continuing with nuclear power in spite of the death and destruction this energy system has had on their people, apparently the United States plans to give its citizens the same misguided, unwarranted lack of protection with new or retrofitted coal plants. Apparently to avoid public protests, the new game plan is to allow coal plant companies to lease more public land. Coal companies would be allowed to open mines in Wyoming and Montana, in an area known as the Powder River Basin. Apparently, Congress left enough loopholes to allow mining in these areas that would not be possible in non-public lands. Thus, complete hearings on the affects of such mining on air, water and climate temperatures will never take place.

A recent report from the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) indicates that building new coal plants or retrofitting old ones makes no financial sense. The report insists: “The truth is that coal is far from cheap, and we can no longer afford the staggering economic, public health, and environmental costs of continued reliance on this outdated energy source.” Instead, UCS researchers call for the same funding to be used to build new renewable energy systems, such as wind and solar power, and phasing out coal burning power plants.

While proponents argue that coal mining is a boon, providing jobs for the American economy, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency argues otherwise. One EPA reports posits: “Burning coal is a leading cause of smog, acid rain, global warming, and air toxins.” The report argues that coal firing plants: 1) Produce almost 4 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2), the main cause of Global Warming; 2) Emit 10,000 tons of sulfur dioxide (SO2) causing acid rain, damaging forests, lakes and buildings and leaving particles in the air that can go into lungs, causing bronchitis, asthma and poor eyesight; 3) 10,200 tons of nitrogen oxide (NOx) forming as much ozone smog as a half million late-model cars; 4) 720 tons of carbon monoxide (CO) bringing headaches and stress on those with heart disease; 5) 170 pounds of mercury, a teaspoon of which can poison fish in a 25-acre lake; 6) 225 pounds of cancer-causing arsenic; and 7) 114 pounds of lead, 4 pounds of cadmium, other heavy metals, as well as uranium–all of which can kill.

Thus, the government is at war with itself–agencies calling for more mining to fuel coal-fired plants versus those advocating for the public health. As President Lincoln said, a nation warring against itself cannot stand. Christians must ask God to give the leaders of this nation wisdom to know how to design job-producing energy that will also protect public health. Proverbs 4: 7 advises: “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.” Protecting the breath and health of children must be a priority. Dressing them in Christian childrens T-shirts is purely a blessing of joy.

Why, Oh Why, Can’t We Do It Too?

posted by Jael Ever @ 14:06 PM
June 14, 2011

Several countries in the Western hemisphere, as well as China, are making much greater strides toward renewal and safer energies than the United States.   Although it is going through massive austerity measures, Britain recently announced an official government goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent by 2025.  And that goal is even more ambitious than the European Union’s official plan to reduce emissions by 20 percent by 2020.  Denmark even now has a total “green” economy and environment.  Germany has vowed to shut down all nuclear power plants within the next decade, and to continue to invest in green energy plans.  And the neighbor to the north of the U.S. has already begun projects that will produce heat and fuel using common household waste.

Canada announced this week that several corporate investors have put funds into their program of turing garbage into fuel for automobiles.  In one example, a company called Enerkem has a 25-year contract to receive all types of municipal waste.  After separating what can be recycled, it heats the remains to 750 degrees so that the waste emits hydrogen and carbon monoxide, which is then scrubbed resulting into methanal and other chemicals.  The process eventually produces excess heat that can be used to boil water and make electricity, and it even emits lower levels of carbon dioxide than corn ethanol.

Last year, the Pew Foundation’s report, “Who’s Winning the Clean Energy Race?” revealed that the U.S. continues to slide down the top 10 list of countries racing toward clean energy.  At the same time, that report says, China “is now the dominant power in installed clean energy and set new records for investment and manufacturing.”  China has surpassed the U.S. in investing in wind and solar energy and in manufacturing clean energy equipment.  The Pew report concludes, “It will be a miracle if the United States is able to stay in the top 10 countries in clean energy installation by 2020, much less hold our own.”

This is bad news for a country that is accustomed to leading the world in energy technology, as well as everything else that is good for its own people, as well as for others.  But apparently no one in authority is listening.  Proverbs 29: 18 says “Where there is no vision, the people perish . . ..”  It is time for this nation to get back its vision of hope, promise and leadership for the good of the nation and the world.  Habakkuk 2: 2 – 4  says, “Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry. . . . the just shall live by his faith.”  Surely, the vision for Christians who live by faith is to begin praying for this nation in repentance and truth.  That is the vision to put on plus size Christian T-Shirts everywhere!

Largest Cat in Western Hemisphere “Sporting” Away

posted by Jael Ever @ 10:35 AM
June 9, 2011

People name high-priced sports cars after this big cat. Big league sports teams also cherish identity with its speed and agility.  But, in truth, those admirers of the jaguar are much safer in their favorite games of life, than the endangered jaguar is in his.  These beautiful animals are so admired because they are the third largest cats in the world, weighing slightly less than lions and tigers. But––with adult males growing to some seven feet long, not counting its tail, and weighing up to 300 pounds––jaguars, with their eye-catching orange skins dotted with black rosettes, are still the largest cats in the western hemisphere.  In addition to being icons for sports teams and car enthusiasts, jaguars also provide high-priced furs for poachers, and “good-time” targets for sporting huntsmen.
These magnificent animals were placed on the Endangered Species List back in 1972.  But that was to little avail, because there are only a few hundred left in the world.  This big cat lives in Arizona, California, Louisiana, New Mexico and Texas in this country.  A few can also be found in Canada and in Central and South America.  After years of legal wrangling, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service now exerts its legal authority to protect the jaguar, even opposing state agencies.

Perhaps because they likewise believed the myth of the jaguar, members of the Bush administration resisted designation of a critical habitat for the endangered animal––giving in only after the Center for Biological Diversity sued three times for protected environments to provide some safety for the animal.  Michael Robinson, spokesman for the Center supported those legal steps:  “With critical habitat designation and a recovery plan, jaguars will have a chance to roam once again through the southwestern lands they’ve inhabited since time immemorial.”

But is doubtful that protected habitats here, as well as in Central and South America, can save this beautiful  creature from extinction.  Too many have been sacrificed for man’s profit, fun and games.  In the middle of the 20th century, about 18,000 jaguars were slaughtered every year for their coats.  Moreover, in the same stretch of time, the animals lost much of their native habitats when forests, grasslands and low mountain ranges were burned off and cleared for logging, cattle ranching, new housing and new city developments.  Moreover, ranchers and native tribesmen shot or hunted down any cat suspected of attacking their herds.

Most readers of this blog are familiar with this archetype by now:  men assumes that all the earth is belongs to them and that they have the right to destroy anything preventing exercise of that ownership.  It is time for believers to emphasize in Christian messages that “The earth is The Lord’s and the fullness thereof (Psalm 24: 1),” for––unless there is sincere and prayerful repentance––in the sinful demise of jaguars lies the sure demise of man and his rule over earth.

Shark Fins “Needed” for Marriages and Other Celebrations

posted by Jael Ever @ 16:49 PM
June 8, 2011

Normally, one would not care about the slaughter of sharks, because they are seen in popular culture as constant predators.  But, like most non-human animals everywhere, sharks face dire threat of extinction.  And that because of a thousand-year Chinese delicacy called Shark Fin Soup.  Lauded as high-cost fine cuisine throughout Asia, this soup is especially served at weddings and banquets.  But environmentalists decry the dish, because of the inhumane method getting fins, which are cut off of sharks, with the fish thrown back into the water to drown.

Shark Fin Soup is even served in the United States.  In April of this year, to the anger of Chinese restaurant owners and patrons, California legislators introduced a ban on using shark fins in cooking.  If passed the ban would prohibit the “possession, sale and consumption of shark fins” in that state.  Ching-Ching Ni explains in an article for the Los Angeles Times:  “First it was roast duck and rice noodles. Then it was cooked frogs and turtles. Now shark fin soup, the caviar of fine Chinese cuisine, is under threat . . .”

But Richard Thomas, Communications for Traffic, which monitors wildlife trade worldwide told Bettina Wasserner of the New York Times:  “If sharks continue to be overfished at the current rate, it’s only a matter of a few years before the targeted species are extinct.”  For instance, researchers estimate that fins from 26 million to 73 million sharks trade through Hong Kong markets, where they sell for hundreds of dollars each.  Some experts estimate that today up to 90 percent of the shark population has been destroyed for one purpose:  to make this soup!

While some in Asia have cut back on the delicacy, others insist that their culture is at stake.  Like so many animal sacrifices in Chinese culture, this soup is also considered to be an important aphrodisiac.  But the blog insists that the opposite is true.  Their writers explain that, as ocean bottom-feeders, sharks contain dangerous levels of mercury, which can be a deadly poison.  Shark Savers insist that the fins can lower sperm count or even cause men to be sterile, that health agencies warm pregnant women not to eat shark, and that dried shark fins contain even more concentrated levels of mercury than fresh ones.  They also point out that now, because the billion plus Chinese people have became wealthy enough to afford this delicacy, sharks are truly being pushed to extinction.

God created this earth with a delicate balance of the ecosystem.  Just as sea turtles are needed to eat jellyfish or else jellyfish consume all fish and plant life beneath them, sharks are necessary to kill skates and rays or else these animals will over-attack shell fish.  Even now clams are highly endangered around the world.   Many things have changed in every culture.  No matter how old, men’s cultures are  only temporary.  But God’s Word is eternal, and Bible prophecies make clear that men will be judged for disrupting the earth from the way that God made it!

Bye Bye Birdies: Another Global Warming Disaster

posted by Jael Ever @ 15:01 PM
June 7, 2011

An innumerable number of bird species in the United States today slide quickly into extinction and very little is done about it.  Birds share common reasons for their decline with most of the other non-human animals on earth:  Global Warming (also known as climate change); habitat loss––particularly loss of wetlands, grasslands (even residential grasses) and deforestation; invasive animals, such as pigs, sheep, deer, rats and parasitic cowbirds; invasive poisonous plants; encroaching energy development, such as wind energy; increasing numbers of diseases, including Avian Bird Flu and West Nile Virus; growth of industrialized agriculture; poisonous water, polluted atmosphere, and, of course, sports huntsmen.

However, unique to birds in this country is injury by collisions with spiraling-high architecture in urban settings, assaults by the ballooning numbers of feral cats; uses of explosives for demolitions or celebrations; and the deliberate killing of mass numbers of birds in order to protect agriculture––such deliberate bird destruction carried out, not only by private farmers, but by federal agencies as well. Nevertheless, the noticeable absence of birds in this country reflects their similar absences around the world.

Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar laments:  “Just as they were when Rachel Carson published ‘Silent Spring’ nearly 50 years ago, birds today are a bellwether of the health of land, water and ecosystems.”  More specifically, he explains:  From shorebirds in New England to warblers in Michigan to songbirds in Hawaii, we are seeing disturbing downward population trends that should set off environmental alarm bells.”

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service puts over 80 bird species in the United States and its territories on their annual  endangered species list.  Commonly-known sub-species among owls, whooping cranes, bobwhites, ducks, condors, blackbirds, falcons, finches, sparrows, storks, cranes, terns, thrushes, warblers, woodpeckers, etc. seem to be quickly tumbling into extinction.   Birdwatchers across the country add larks and herons to that list.  The state of Hawaii is particularly hard hit in this tragedy.  Over one-third of the birds on the Wildlife Service list are in Hawaii.  And that island’s beautiful birds are in dire danger.

Shamefully, human hoggishness steals life from land, sea and air animals. God commanded man to allow birds to multiply:  “And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, , , , and let fowl multiply in the earth (Genesis 1: 22).  After the judgment, He commanded Noah to allow birds to multiply:  “Bring forth with thee every living thing that is with thee, . . . of fowl . . . that they may breed abundantly in the earth, and be fruitful, and multiply . . . .” However, Bible prophecies indicate that birds will justifiably exact their revenge in these end times.

Cockroaches: Diseases From the Other Household Pests

posted by Jael Ever @ 14:58 PM
June 6, 2011

It is an unpleasant subject, but as America is being pelted more and more by floods, earthquakes and other earth disturbances, the public must exercise greater care for the prevalence of “normal” household pests, that were once considered rather harmless.  Most people are not aware of the diseases that well-known insects can bring.  However, because of the filth they live and breed in, roaches carry many diseases.  And they must be seen as a greater threat to human survival.

For instance, cockroaches can transmit such diseases as: asthma, allergies, staphylococcus, streptococcus, dysentery, typhoid, salmonella, gastroenteritis and Ecoli bacteria.  Health and fitness expert, Sharon Bell adds: The cockroach is a very significant threat to public health as it is a mechanical carrier of germs and diseases. It may also pass on parasitic worms, the viruses of poliomyelitis, and other microorganisms such as those carrying hepatitis A and leprosy.”

Some scientists even believe that roaches carry the dreaded SARS virus.  Dr. Xing Ping Hu, Assistant Professor of  Entomology at Auburn University, reports that roaches are known carriers of many different diseases, including: “32 bacterial and 17 fungal related diseases, three protozoa-related illnesses and two viruses.”  The suspicion about SARS came when that diseases broke out in very crowded apartment buildings in Hong Kong.  Dr. Art Appel, also an entomology professor at Auburn University, said that roaches, as carriers of the dreadful outbreak, is certainly in the realm of possibility. He adds further that “cockroaches are believed to be mechanical vectors of some disease organisms,” meaning that they can carry a disease from one place to another.  Both researchers site other examples of roaches producing deadly diseases in crowded apartment buildings including: dysentery outbreaks in Northern Ireland and in Southern California.  “In both cases, the illnesses began dropping off when cockroach populations declined.”

While it is not in the Bible, the old-time adage “Cleanliness is next to Godliness” was once the housewife’s 11th commandment.  Certainly what separated Old Testament believers from their heathen neighbors was the extraordinary caution that Jewish priests took with cleanliness when attacking disease.  The Old Testament book of Leviticus in wholesale Christian Bibles commanded priests to wash down homes, patients and themselves thoroughly and often to prevent the spread of disease.  And their practices provided a basis for modern medicine.  Both the adage and such practice of cleanliness must return to the proper care of living quarters if people are to survive these attacks from killer insects now moving upon the earth.  Just as Old Testament believers looked to priests for their health and healing, people today must look to Jesus, The Author and High Priest of Our Faith (Hebrews 12: 2).  He is ever willing to save, to bless to heal and to cleanse us from all that sickens and defiles!

Global Warming Summer: Avoid Mosquitos

posted by Jael Ever @ 10:34 AM
June 2, 2011

Mosquito-borne diseases are particularly present in this era of excessively hot Global Warming summers.  Mosquitos cause some 300 million cases of malaria each year, resulting in one to three million deaths around the world.  In addition to malaria, this insect can cause dengue fever, yellow fever, encephalitis (brain inflammation or EEE), and elephantiasis.  People living in other nations are accustomed to living with this risk from mosquito bites, but those in the U.S. are not.  However, last year, in Florida, Texas, Massachusetts, etc., several people fell ill, and some died, from various diseases resulting from mosquito bites.  And with increasing numbers of aliens from Central and South America coming to this country, that number may well increase.

According to Wire, “reported cases of dengue have more than quadrupled in Central and South America, Mexico and the Caribbean — from about 1 million in 1980-1989 to nearly 4.8 million in 2000-2007.”  Reasons include urbanization, more international travel and lack of mosquito-control containments in countries south of the U.S. border.  Thus, more Americans returning home from south of the border report many more cases of dengue fever.    And, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, because it is a center of international travel to and from countries in Centural and South America, Florida has become a ripe breeding ground for dengue fever.
In her book on the outbreak of dengue in urban areas of Puerto Rico, Dr. Kay Tomashek, mentions hot, humid tropical countries––such as the South Pacific, the Caribbean, Brazil, the Americas, etc.––as locations most probable to contact dengue.  She points out that there is no vaccine or drug that can prevent dengue infection.   She also agrees with health officials in Florida, who according to Reuters, “urge residents to use mosquito repellents, wear protective clothing and avoid being outside at dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are most active.”  As mosquitos use stagnant water as breeding grounds, other experts advise keeping pools, water storage barrels, bird baths or other water containers either covered, cleaned with fresh water daily, or else keep them empty and dried out.  Dr. Tomashek adds that travelers should use screened windows or air conditioning, and avoid dark cook places, such as closets, under beds or behind curtains.

The United States was once safer from such diseases.  But political considerations, as well as results of Global Warming, have weakened her borders––physically, mentally and spiritually.  Just as several insect invasions were steps toward bringing down Egypt (Exodus chapters 9 to 16), these weakened borders portent judgment against this country.  For those who do not know how to stand in the gap and intercede for the nation (Ezekiel 22:30), Christian prayer books may give some guidance.  Excellent examples are also in Daniel and Nehemiah.

Waiting For the Next Summer Havoc: Locust Attacks

posted by Jael Ever @ 11:01 AM
June 1, 2011

While agricultural scientists in the United States believe that they have chemicals powerful enough to withstand attacks by hordes of locusts, those in other nations know better.  In addition to the most destructive years imaginable––including massive earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, and other Global Warming anomalies––Australia also combats locusts.  The same is the case in Afghanistan, Eritrea, Bulgaria, India, Spain’s Canary Islands and even Canada.  Locust can fly some 70 miles in a day, and they easily adapt to the changing climates of Global Warming.  So many nations around the world fear locust attacks that this year the United Nations and the World Bank initiated efforts to defeat marauding locusts.

Currently the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations is gearing up to assist nations in Central Asia and the Caucasus to save millions of acres of farmland from locust attacks.  According to, “Locusts are a serious threat for agriculture, food security and livelihoods in both regions including adjacent areas of northern Afghanistan and the southern Russian Federation.”  Three different types of locusts––Italian, Moroccan and Migratory––will easily fly from one nation to another attacking at least ten countries in the region:  Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russian Federation, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

Some types of locusts attack annually; others on multi-year schedules.  In the Congo, Locust appear once in every 14 years.  But Australia expects locust invasions so often that each region has an official locust commissioner.  Gordon Berg, the Victorian plague locust commissioner, reports that warm and wet weather makes that continent most desirable to the pests.  Last year, Australia and New South Wales endured the worse locust attacks in 30 years.  This year, Berg announces that large numbers of rather enormous spur-throated locusts are invading Victoria for the first time.  Much larger than normal plague locusts, spur-throated locusts are stripping trees and vines everywhere they move.

Some scientists expect that the higher temperatures and wet weather Global Warming brings to this nation provides the perfect setting for the kinds of locust attacks in the U.S. in the early 20th century.  Thus, they expect locust swarms here as now in Europe, Africa and the Australian continent in the very near future.  Regular readers this blog site remember its stress on the various insect judgments (including locusts) God sent against Egypt.  These relentless bug invasions forced that nation to free Israel as recorded in Exodus, chapters 5 to 14.  Bible prophecies refer to the experience of Israel’s deliverance from Egypt as symbolic examples of end-time battles between God’s forces and Satan’s followers.  Professing Christians must be ready to withstand such swarms of judgment in these last days.
