America, The Land of Stuff!!

Sooooooooo.  Now the nation must survive Black Friday.  What a name!  It is suppose to mean that time of year that pulls businesses into profit.  But still!  Couldn’t they find a better way to say it.  Ads flood T.V. screens showing women getting up before dawn so they can fight to be first when the stores open, and others deciding which jewel or car to buy.   The term Black Friday sounds like a day of mourning.  And maybe that is one way it should be seen.

We have so much stuff in this country.  Do we really need more televisions, DVRs, computers, clothes, cell phones, cars, movies, games, gadgets, etc. when we have the poor and homeless walking our streets.  Is it possible that we have become a nation of stuff-gluttons floating on a sea of poverty?

The Bible especially calls out women––the gender that is especially given the task to care for the poor and needy (as in Proverbs 31: 20)––to avoid the downfall of frivolous excess for the sake of super-glamour.  Isaiah 3: 16 – 26 in wholesale Christian Bibles indicates that such devotion of material possessions can bring about a nation’s downfall:  “Moreover the LORD saith, Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with stretched forth necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing [as] they go, and making a tinkling with their feet: Therefore the Lord will smite with a scab the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, and the LORD will discover their secret parts.  In that day the Lord will take away the bravery of [their] tinkling ornaments [about their feet], and [their] cauls, and [their] round tires like the moon, The chains, and the bracelets, and the mufflers, The bonnets, and the ornaments of the legs, and the headbands, and the tablets, and the earrings,The rings, and nose jewels, The changeable suits of apparel, and the mantles, and the wimples, and the crisping pins, The glasses, and the fine linen, and the hoods, and the vails.  And it shall come to pass, [that] instead of sweet smell there shall be stink; and instead of a girdle a rent; and instead of well set hair baldness; and instead of a stomacher a girding of sackcloth; [and] burning instead of beauty.  Thy men shall fall by the sword, and thy mighty in the war.  And her gates shall lament and mourn; and she [being] desolate shall sit upon the ground.”

This message indicates that too much needless stuff could lead to judgment.  With the nation fighting wars on two fronts, with so many families loosing homes and jobs, with nations in Europe going bankrupt and our own nation going through the worse recession since the Great Depression, and with cities running low on water and power fighting Global Warming, and so many citizens falling onto poverty rolls––now is the time to think about thanksgiving, repentance and earnest prayer for family, neighbor and nation.  It is also a time of giving to help others.  Now may not be the best time to think so much about more of Black Friday’s stuff!
