Too often Americans take food safety for granted. Some items––such as meat, ice cream, sodas, fish, vegetables and fruits, etc.––could be just as treacherous as killer snake bites, ravenous dogs, and the most deadly poisons.
AP reporters Terry Wallace and Nicholas Clayton write: “The deaths of three people who developed a food-borne illness linked to Blue Bell ice cream products have prompted the Texas icon’s first product recall in its 108-year history.”
They were among five people sickened with this ice cream while in a Kansas hospital: “According to . . . the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, all five of the people sickened were receiving treatment for unrelated health issues at the same Kansas hospital before developing listeriosis, a finding that strongly suggests their infections (with listeria bacteria) were acquired in the hospital.”
In ‘Kansas Officials: 3 Dead after Listeria Linked to Ice Cream Products,’ Amanda Watts of CNN warns: “The Food and Drug Administration said Blue Bell has removed potentially contaminated products . . . from the retailers and hospital settings. The company shut down production line where the products were made.
“The FDA is warning consumers to who may have purchased the following items to discard them: Chocolate Chip Country Cookie, Great Divide Bar, Sour Pop Green Apple Bar, Cotton Candy Bar, Scoops, Vanilla Stick Slices, Almond Bar, No-Sugar Added Mooo Bar (regular Mooo Bars are not included).”
According to foodsafety.gov, listeria is a bacteria found in soil, water and some animals. “It can be present in raw milk and foods made from raw milk. It can also live in food processing plants. it can grow even in cold temperature[s].”
On his way by sea to trial before the Roman government, Paul warned captain and crew that an extremely dangerous storm was coming and they should wait. But they wouldn’t listen. According to used Christian Bibles, Paul prayed for the crew’s safety, but the ship itself was wrecked. Apostle Luke, a physician, who traveled with Paul writes:
“And while the day was coming on, Paul besought them all to take meat, saying, This day is the fourteenth day that ye have tarried and continued fasting, having taken nothing. Wherefore I pray you to take some meat: for this is for your health: for there shall not an hair fall from the head of any of you.
“And when he had thus spoken, he took bread, and gave thanks to God in presence of them all: and when he had broken it, he began to eat. Then were they all of good cheer, and they also took some meat. And we were in all in the ship two hundred threescore and sixteen souls (Acts 27: 33 – 37).”
What do the apostles establish here: 1) Food is for health, not pleasure; 2) Believers must thank God for their food; 3) After fasting, food is necessary to sustain life; 4) Food provisions ultimately come from God’s divine miracles––they are not a political right to take for granted.
As the ship stores were destroyed, where did the food Paul served come from? God provided it––just as He miraculously fed Israel in the wilderness––after Paul fasted and prayed. Thus, Christians should not take food for granted, and they definitely should pray before they eat.
As Global Warming’s dangers to Planet Earth’s become increasingly obvious to most people, hidden beneath what is known about its affects is what governments and big corporations prevent Americans and citizens in other developed nations from doing what they can do to stop it.
Simple innovations and common-sense practices could easily reduce the use of carbon fuels, the greatest cause of heating atmospheres, melting glaciers, and warming world oceans. These include underground wiring, solar paneling, localized heat and hot water heaters, out-side clothes drying, more public transportation and high-speed rail lines instead of gas-burning automobiles, etc.
For instance, instead of spending billions on un-winnable wars, local, state and federal taxes could provide underground wiring which would prevent power outages and keep people from dying in harshest winter conditions. Such safety measures would decrease the constant need of utility company repairs, which again use carbon-fueled trucks to maintain some semblance of residential power.
Allowing people to install solar panels on roof tops, using the sun to warm water and houses would again decrease such high dependence on carbon burning energy. But unfortunately, too many neighborhoods give little if any reason as to why these panels remain forbidden. Is it because politicians are heavily influenced by power companies not willing to reduce the use of carbon-burning energy?
A simple thing like ‘allowing’ homes and apartments to install water heaters under sinks, rather than in basements would greatly reduce amounts of power needed to bring warmer water from heaters in basements where water simply cools and must be reheated again, and again.
Yet major retailers refuse to sell such localized heaters, forcing people to buy the larger and more expensive ones. And of course they don’t sell solar panels or light plastic roofing either, because the present roofing materials––i.e. tiles and tars––require carbon-based ingredients.
One wonders why some politicians fought so hard to prevent high-speed trains from serving the East Coast which would have saved billions in carbon-burning transportation. But then it is well know that automobile companies use vast political powers to discourage public transportation.
Yet good meaning people kept fight for better lower-emission fuels, electric cars and other forms of non-carbon based transportation which have grown increasingly popular. One wonders if the increase in ‘cross-over’ car models is the truth behind Saudi Arabia’s drive to lower gasoline prices, so drivers won’t switch.
The one that gets me though are the gazillions of local ordinances forbidding drying clothes on old-fashion clothes lines, because “they lower the aesthetic value of neighborhood properties.” No, what they do is to keep people buying dryers.
Thousands of good-meaning people fight usually losing battles against such life-threatening allegiances between corporations and governments. But now the stakes are too high. Knowing the whole planet can go up in flames so that a few people can continue to make billions on carbon-based fuels, and knowing that workers can easily be retrained, money barons argue that change will cost jobs.
That not to change will kill millions of of people, they seem to care less. If only they understood the real ‘end game’––Judgment Day––then such selfish greed would not be so appealing. But as used Christian Bibles warn: “For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows (1 Timothy 6: 10).”
Rites of evil increase in these last days. Supposedly well-meaning Christians become swept-up in bewildering satanic activity. Pastors, parents, and prayer warriors must be on alert during the coming Satanic high feast day of Halloween.
Ask police departments in any small town or large city about Halloween! Those who will admit it know the truth. For instance, a PDF on ‘Halloween Sex Offender Laws’ says: “ . . . a growing number of states that have enacted laws restricting the activities of sex offenders on Halloween. . . restrictions imposed on sex offenders during Halloween hours generally range from “no passing out candy” to “no driving after dark” . . . the laws are primarily meant to protect children from potential threats by former sex offenders and child predators on Halloween.”
Or ask vigilant news reporters like Haley Smith who writes: “Police and parents are . . . more careful because of the latest suspicious activity . . . where there have been two reported attempts of a stranger trying get kids into the car. Two kids said a woman tried to get them into her car while they were walking . . . another reason to be concerned—a Safe Kids report shows twice as many children are hit and killed on the roads on Halloween than on any other day of the year.”
Unfortunately, the most gut-wrenching horror stories about Halloween are from women and girls forced to breed babies in hidden underground Satanic holds so their infant off-spring can be used for human sacrifice during Halloween season. As infowars.com recites the testimony of one girl in ‘The Dark Side Of Halloween: The Kind Of Stuff That Real Life Nightmares Are Made Of’:
“My father worked in the aerospace industry. My mother worked for a doctor. On the outside just looked normal, but nobody knew what was going on behind closed doors. My father was actually a Satanic high priest, so he did all kinds of evil things. He sexually assaulted me, took me to satanic rituals. My father actually used me as a baby breeder, which means I was impregnated so the Satanists would have a baby to sacrifice to the devil in their Satanic rituals. As soon as I was able to have a baby, I was pregnant.”
So why do ‘born again’ Christians want to do anything during Halloween season but pray? Ever since the 1950s and 1960s when most pastors in America substituted ‘Bible Study’ for regular Wednesday Night Prayer Services, evil has run roughshod over this nation: 1) Prayer was taken out of schools in 1962;
2) Halloween advanced to become the largest commercial spending season in America, second only to Christmas; 3) The numbers of kidnapped, missing and murdered children has mushroomed; 4) Satanism, demon cult worship, Satanic rock music, and horror films flood movie houses and television sets; and
5) Even some churches, claiming The Name of Jesus, began celebrating Halloween with ghoulish decorations, and evening parties, including masked costumes and ‘sweet’ treats. Again, the urgent question: “Why are Christian churches before and during Halloween night doing anything but praying?”
God’s Word in all used Christian Bibles makes absolutely clear: “And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them (Ephesians 5: 11).” One definition of ‘worship’ is “to feel an adoring reverence or regard.” So, again: why are ‘Christians’ showing such regard for Satan’s holiday? Only the prayer power of interceding Christians can break such a Satanic hold.
She knew that heaven would be so much more difficult to describe than Earth, or even Hell. So she told the congregation that they should look into God’s Word with her to see what The Judgement Seat of Christ would be like.
“That ‘judgment’––consider it to be like a difficult final exam in school––is for genuine ‘born-again’ Christians alone––not for the phony go to church for society crowd,” she tried to say graciously without casting blame on anyone.
“It is for those who live on Earth with Him in their hearts, who pray to Him and in His Name, for the few who chose Him because He first loved them.” She waited to see if there would be any squirmers, and continued as they seem to wait.
“These will be judged in turn by Jesus, Their Master and LORD. The Bible indicates they will not only be judged individually, but in families, and churches.” A few wiggled there. As group leader she knew who hadn’t spoken to parents and siblings in years, who hadn’t really truthfully forgiven them for years.
So she eased off a bit. “Those outside of Christ, who refused His rule as LORD, or who never heard any Christian witness about Him, will be judged by God The Father. They will not have Jesus as Advocate to plead their case. All of their sins will be open before God and all others to see, visually on judgment’s screen.”
She had turned her eyes away as if no one there were included in that group. “Yes, I know many long to see family members in heaven. But do they really look forward to seeing Jesus, to stand before Their LORD to be judged for what they have done for Him in this present life on Earth?
“Gold, silver, precious stones, Apostle Paul writes in used Christian Bibles (1 Corinthians 3: 12), those are believers‘ rewards. Then Paul adds that useless wood, hay and stubble will be taken away from rewards as each believer’s works are set on fire! And as the song goes, ‘Only What’s Done for Christ will last’.”
Again, she looked up towards the roof, trying not directly view anyone. “Hardened hearts will be melted, but it will come too late. Oh, only if one had asked his brother or sisters forgiveness when life was precious. If only flesh had been crucified and sin resisted. If only love had been sown instead of indifference. And what about witnessing to the lost, and tithes and offerings for the poor?
“If only churches had prayed and kept on praying on Wednesday nights, instead of just Bible study. If only pastors had preached the judgment messages of the Bible, and not just those about grace and prosperity. If only many Christians had chosen to follow God’s will for their lives instead of their own.
“If only families had prayer and Bible study together. If only believers had lived for those things important to God, and not those things important to themselves. If only they had gone deeper into God’s Word instead of spending so much time with issues of the world. If only they had prayed for the nation, state, and community, for its leaders, and law enforcement workers, and for other nations and especially for Israel to keep peace around the world.” She cried then.
“All the wasted time.” She wept even more. If only . . . if only . . . if only.
Kid reporters around the country, and the world, continue to send in stories about declining bird populations. Human encroachment over bird nesting habitats, increasing attacks from pet cats, and Global Warming endanger some 1200 species.
endangeredspeciesinternational.org/birds6 says: “12% of all living bird species are considered endangered, threatened, or vulnerable. It is too late to save some of them, but others still have a chance if we act now.”
So the site advises people: “Take steps to halt global climate change. Support legislation that sets greenhouse gas reduction targets. Vote for legislators who pledge to fight global warming. Reduce your own carbon footprint.”
Bird lovers should avoid pesticides and chemical fertilizers as they also impact bird environments. Also, experts demand that people not keep wild birds in captivity. But most important they insist that cat owners keep those pets indoors.
Also birds6 says: “For your back yard, plant indigenous trees and flowers. The website of Plant Native provides information on native plants that favor wildlife including birds. If you have space in your back yard, consider creating a small pond. It will become an essential habitat for insects, amphibians, and birds.”
The ivory-billed woodpecker is now the most critically endangered bird in America. mnn.com says “Among the world’s largest woodpeckers, the 20-inch long bird used to flourish in the swampy forests of the South and lower Midwest. Due to habitat loss from development and heavy logging, the bird is now questionably extinct. The last confirmed sighting of the bird was in 1987, and since then, experts have been on a quest to find and restore the bird.”
According to theguardian.com/environment, after assessing 9,993 bird species, the Zoological Society of London and Yale University claim “the rare and striking giant ibis (Thaumatibis gigantea)––the world’s largest ibis weighing in at 4.2kg and reaching more than one metre in height––is the most endangered.” Only 230 pairs remain in the wild, and they concentrate in Cambodia.
In Australia the most endangered bird species is the Gouldian Finch. WWF-Australia says less than 2500 adults of this bird exist. However, indigenous rangers found juvenile populations living in nesting the birds created from monsoon vine thickets and unburnt woodland.
One of Australia’s WWF program managers, Alexander Watson, explains: “The reason for the decline of the species is unknown, although scientists speculate that altered fire regimes, cattle, and throat parasites have been contributing factors.
A large pet trade that was banned in the mid-1980s is also thought to have had a significant impact.” In all nations, land management is vital for bird survival.
Careful readers of used Christian Bibles know that birds are often used for: healing instruments (Leviticus 14), food (Deuteronomy 14: 11), and for symbols to illustrate man’s relationship with man and with God: “As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come (Proverbs 26: 2).”
But at the end of time, birds will get revenge on people for their destruction of the species: “And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God; . . . And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh (Revelation 19: 17 – 21).”
Among many dangerously factors attacking patients and health practitioners recently, one of the the most dangerous is the arrival of fake drugs––now not only in poorer nations, but in First World nations as well.
Members of organized crime find the enterprise of counterfeit medicines makes far more money than ‘regular’ crimes, is easier to carry out, and usually garners far less jail time if caught! The problem: fake drugs kill people!
Roger Bate of the American Enterprise Institute estimates that these fake medicines kill at least 100,000 people a year, mostly in poorer countries. Usually drug smugglers of heroin or cocaine expect harsh sentences, but, as economist.com explains: “Some governments deem drug-counterfeiting a trivial offense, little more than a common irritant. After all, whose spam filter does not groan with ads for suspiciously cheap “Viagra?” But what about those without computers?
The international police force––Interpol––warns that ‘Pharmaceutical Crime’ involves the manufacture, trade and distribution of fake, stolen or illicit medicines and medical devices. It encompasses the counterfeiting and falsification of medical products, their packaging and associated documentation, as well as theft, fraud, illicit diversion, smuggling, trafficking, the illegal trade of medical products and the money laundering associated with it.”
That agency is particularly stressed by the rise of these illegal sales through internet purchases, and across state lines: “They operate across national borders in activities that include the import, export, manufacture and distribution of counterfeit and illicit medicines.”
In ‘The Painful Costs of Counterfeit Prescription Drugs,’ Paul Toscano explains: “The counterfeit pharmaceuticals industry is estimated to be a billion-dollar industry. . . The drugs often have incorrect amounts of active ingredients, if those ingredients are present at all, and are illegal in developed countries.”
For some years now, international police officials have known, and the World Health Organization certifies, that counterfeit prescription drugs can make up as much as 70% of drugs supplied to the poorest nations are fake!
The U. N. Office on Drugs and Crime says: “. . . the sale of fraudulent medicines from East Asia and the Pacific to South-East Asia and Africa alone amounts to some $5 billion per year.” Several years ago, it could be said that, because of better regulatory and marketing control in wealthier countries, illegal drug seepage was under one percent. But that is no longer the case.
According to Toscano, “FDA confirmed that counterfeit versions of legitimate drugs, including Ambien, Xanax, Lexapro, and Ativan, are available for Americans to purchase online. John Clark of Pfizer adds: “Counterfeiters used to operate chiefly in developing countries, says Mr Clark, but now his firm sees fakes coming from such rich and well-regulated places as Canada and Britain.”
As well-used Christian Bibles alert believers: “That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive (Ephesians 4: 14).” Of course the source of fake drugs is that killer, Satan, and true believers never cooperate with that fein.
This is amazing, unheard of, astounding. This blogger may have to do like Feermeno and ask Jael for some time off. What’s the problem, readers may ask?
Here it is: Apparently, Viktor Yanukovych, ex-President of Ukraine, walked off with $32 billion [that’s billion, not million, in dollars]––he and his friends just took it to Russia––and now they use it to finance this revolt in eastern Ukraine.
Is this normal in today’s world? Are certain nations just like the plantations my great great grandmother described, where people ‘owning’ people use them like pawns as they wish? Just how are some countries being run today?
How can an elected official and his cronies just take whatever they want and vanish? (Elected? Ex-Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko insists the election was stolen). Aren’t there safe-guards in banks and financial systems to prevent such behavior? Years of training in economics and politics were no preparation for this!
Ivan Verstyuk of Kyiv Post writes today: “Disgraced former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and his entourage, whose criminal regime was toppled on Feb. 22 after the three-month EuroMaidan revolution, took $32 billion in cash to Russia. . . . [and] is using this money to finance the pro-Russian separatist movement in the eastern regions of Ukraine.”
Because of these missing funds, Ukraine must borrow funds from Western countries to meet its 2014 budget of $ 31.5 this year. Interim Ukraine officials accuse Russia of harboring criminals, such as Yanukovych and ex-Interior Minister Vitaliy) Zakharchenko. But Russian prosecutors respond they will not extradite them because they are “legitimate Ukrainian government officials.”
There must be some truth to Verstyuk’s report because just a few weeks ago, “the U.S. State Department announced that the U.S. had sent a group of FBI agents and financial and legal officials to Kyiv to facilitate the return of Ukrainian assets from abroad.” A team from Great Britain also works on the project.
Ukraine’s Acting Prosecutor General Oleg Makhnitsky claims to have identified some $3 billion of stolen assets. He adds: “the former regime acted as an organized crime gang that left the country’s treasury bare.”
Austria, Lichtenstein and Switzerland––some of the same countries hiding multiple billions of former Nazis’ wealth––admit they have some of Ukraine’s assets and will help to recover them. As of Jan. 1, 2013, Swiss banks records show they had $2 billion of capital that came from Ukraine on their accounts.
Last month, the Russian press reported that Yanukovych paid $ 52 million for “a luxurious residence in Rublyovka, a posh suburb of Moscow,” as a consolation for losing his palatial residence near Kyiv valued at one billion dollars. And by the way, those Ukrainian central bank officials, who tried to sneak cash and gold out of the ex-President’s campaign headquarters, were caught!
So some of those the world call nations today (i.e. North Korea) are nothing but fiefdoms, or as my grandma’ would say, plantations, where rulers can use income produced by workers any way the masters want to.
But then, as used Christian Bibles instruct, there are some sins this world may not catch, that only God will judge: “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap (Galatians 6: 7).”
How much will it take for this nation to understand that traveling in space is stupid for so many reasons, including: 1) It greatly endangers the health of astronauts; 2) It could poison space with earth’s most sinister viruses; and 3) It could also bring unknown lethal viruses from space to earth!
Not only experiments with flies sent up in space, but medical records of astronauts prove that space travel damages the health of those who leave this earth to explore the unknown and return. While the crew of Apollo VII was in space, all three suffered serious head colds, painful ear popping and forms of emotional breakdowns. NASA offered excuses, but none of them ever returned to space.
In his ‘Time Magazine’ article Jeffery Kluger explored that incident in depth. He quotes Dr. Leonard Mermel, infectious disease specialist of Brown University and Rhode Island Hospital: “Two years in a microgravity environment may have profound changes in astronauts and in aggressive microbes, creating a scenario not previously experienced in the history of human space flight.”
In studying the 30 year history of the space shuttle program, Mermel found 29 cases of infectious disease transmission––i.e. fever, and chills; fungal, urinary tract and skin infections; flu-like illnesses and viral gastroenteritis.
And then there is the matter of protecting space with diseases astronauts bring from earth. As Ian Steadman of wired.co writes: “When searching for life on another world, the most fundamental precaution that any space agency needs to take with any probe or rover is to ensure it doesn’t carry Earth microbes. However, if reports are to be believed, Nasa may have screwed up . . .
“ . . . the possible contamination occurred six months before the rover’s launch in November 2011. Curiosity’s drill bits were designed to be stored in a sealed box, separate from the drill mechanism––however, a Nasa engineer worried that a rough landing might make assembling the drill on Mars impossible (and thus rendering one of the rover’s most important tools impotent), and opened the sealed unit to install one drill bit as a kind of backup.
“This happened without consulting Nasa’s team dedicated to avoiding contaminating Mars with Earth bacteria. Worried scientists at Nasa now estimate that there may be as many as 250,000 bacterial spores that could have survived both the journey to Mars and the landing.”
Conversely, some scientists admit that scholars have no idea just what spores or microbes space travelers or their ships may bring back to earth. In ‘Protecting Space from Earth and Protecting Earth from Space,’ the guardians.com proclaims:
“Unless we are extremely careful, we may unwittingly bring unwanted and potentially dangerous life forms back to Earth, when we visit other planets and moons in the Solar System. . . micro-organisms can survive in adverse conditions, including those found in space, possibly for prolonged periods. Long enough to hitch a ride on a spacecraft returning to Earth from an interplanetary mission.”
That site points out that an unknown type of bacteria has shown up twice in thoroughly washed clean rooms of ships returning to earth: “Only the hardiest of microbes can survive inside a spacecraft clean room, where the air is stringently filtered, the floors are cleansed with certified cleaning agents, and surfaces are wiped with alcohol and hydrogen peroxide, then heated to temperatures high enough to kill almost any living thing.” That bacteria cannot be eliminated!
Before men try to ‘conquer’ space, the secrets, solutions and skills needed to survive on earth should have come first. Space travel’s extreme expense brings little return to earth’s sufferers. As God asked Job in well-read used Christian Bibles: “Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? or hast thou walked in the search of the depth (38: 16)?” If they cannot say ‘yes,’ how can they go elsewhere?
Those sanctions Russian President Putin placed on the United States proves, among other things, that he has no understanding of America, or of its history, or of the democratic politics that rule this country as done by, of and for its people.
In contrast, Russia is and always has been accustomed to one-person rule, first under kingly czars, and then by a lone Communist leader. Both ruled by domineering force, often with brutality and murders. As once head of the monstrous secret KGB death and torture squad, such rule is all Putin knows.
But the fall of the Soviet Union changed all of that. Fifteen countries––i.e. Ukraine, Poland, Belarus, etc. with hundreds of thousands of people––got out from under Russia’s thumb. The great Russian empire had collapsed. And neither Putin nor the Russian people ever got over it.
Unlike the sham democracy in Putin’s Russia where everyone in his cabinet and parliament were selected to rubber-stamp his every move, the Senators he sanctioned are not the U.S. President’s hand-picked cronies or special friends. In fact, in some cases, they are his political enemies.
Putin’s punishments may have blocked American politicians from visiting Russia, when in fact they have no desire to do so. But the U.S. stranglehold on the bank where Russian oligarchs hide their wealth brings grave financial consequence.
Going up against the United States, the greatest national power on the face of the earth, the Russians are playing a weak hand from a rather weak position. Such power enables the U.S. to haunt Putin and his personal political connections. Of course, Putin does not have the power to respond in kind.
Proving he doesn’t understand this country, Putin served prevention papers on Senator John McCain. Does he think the U.S. President and Sen. McCain are good friends? How does he explain the Senator’s speeches against the President? Such a speech would cost Putin’s political opponents serious jail time.
The United States, Germany and other western countries have been trying for years to placate Putin to no avail. He, and most of his people, yearn for times when they had the world’s respect as a great empire. Now Russia is a mere nation.
And Putin is an outcast, seen by the world––i.e. the United Nations––as a bully and a liar. His take over of Crimea has cost him membership in the G-8, a group of world leaders––Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States––who cooperate for peaceful purposes. It goes back to being the G-7. He is not invited, and Russia is no longer seen as an equal.
As Russia’s president pouts and considers his options, he views China, Russia’s step-child, as a vast empire. He sees Germany has amassed an EU economic empire. And he pines away for more incursions, anxious to get his empire back.
A man short in statue, but long in pride, Putin casts an ominous shadow upon the world stage. Working with Syria and Iran––two other nations craving return of historical empires––he sees a way to gain his goal through threats and mini-wars.
But such attempts to turn back the tide of history will only lead to War World III, and ultimate failure. As well- used Christian Bibles underline: “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall (Proverbs 16:18).” Only, the pity is, Putin will not fall alone, he will take millions to eternity with him!
Russia’s move yesterday toward over-taking the rest of Ukraine has thrown world economies into a tail-spin––including the billionaire fortunes of its oligarchy. U.S. stock markets fell several points. They remain nervous today.
Much of the concern is over Russia’s threat on its ‘right’ to invade all of Ukraine in order to “control violence” if Crimean residents vote this Sunday to secede from Ukraine and join the Russian federation.
Secretary of State Kerry’s attempts today to mediate a settlement with Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, failed. Kerry told the Washington Post: “there will be consequences if Russia does not find a way to change course.” And he said there would be “an even greater response” if Russia were to “threaten the Ukrainian people,” such as by sending forces into eastern Ukraine.
Pointing out that China’s economy is also in down-fall, today’s ‘Investor’s Business Daily’ headlines: “U.S. stocks fell on higher volume Thursday, erasing this year’s gains for the S&P 500, as tensions in Ukraine and weaker data from China overshadowed reports showing an improving American economy.”
Agnes Lovasz of bloomberg.com avers: “President Vladimir Putin’s brinkmanship in Ukraine has already cost some of his closest comrades billions of dollars. The other 144 million Russians may also pay a price.”
Lovasz quotes Timothy Ash, chief emerging-market economist at Standard Bank Group Ltd. in London: “Russia will be the big loser of the crisis in Ukraine . . . There’ll be a big hit to domestic and foreign confidence, less investment and likely increased outflows, likely losses for Russian banks with exposure in Ukraine, a weaker ruble and weaker growth and recovery.”
In ‘Putin’s Ukraine Gambit Hurts Economy as Allies Lose Billions, Lovasz points out: “The tensest standoff with the West since the end of the Cold War is exposing the weakness of an economy rebuilt on the back of the energy industry. With oil and gas accounting for more than half of all exports and energy prices stagnant, the growth potential is all but exhausted, prompting officials in Moscow to sound the recession alarm.” But a new economic war is a much louder alarm!
Thus, this whole Ukrainian drama may be to cover up the fact that Russia’s economy is failing, even as those in the rest of Europe and the U.S. recover! However, instead of helping its economy, the ‘war’ in Ukraine may well worsen it.
Karl Henkel on The Detroit News writes today in ‘Ukraine Crisis Makes Carmakers Wary of Russia’: “The geopolitical struggle over Ukraine could slow growth in Russia’s auto market, which until recently was considered a diamond in the rough . . . but the problems facing [it] aren’t confined to its reaction to the uncertainty over the future of Crimea in the Ukraine.”
As discussed in the last ‘economy blog,’ Russia’s attempts to play offense in an economic war, belies its extremely defensive position. Vladimir Putin is a very proud man who wants his nation to be on par with the U.S. and E.U. To cover up his country’s failures, he will push for land and economic expansion until it starts a hot World War III, and China will, of course, join him for the same reasons.
But as used Christian Bibles promise: “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall (Proverbs 16: 18).” Only this time, Putin will bring down many more in destruction other than himself, Russia, or the Ukraine!
