The tainted food summer-saga has started early this year. A minor internet story exploded onto major media outlets this week: 1.8 million pounds of ground beef, as well as raw clover spouts and mushrooms, slither with E.coli infections.
When the smaller story first broke, it was assumed that the poisoned hamburger from Wolverine Packing Company in Detroit, Michigan, was only distributed to restaurants in that state and Massachusetts, Missouri and Ohio. But investigators found that food brokers have distributed that meat across the country.
As Samantha Bonar of L.A. Weekly reveals, this particular E.coli strain is the most dangerous: “The ground beef is potentially contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, the nastiest strain of the bacteria, which can lead to deadly kidney failure, particularly in children and the elderly.
“The FSIS ranks this a Class I, ‘high health risk’ recall, which means, this is a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.”
Caroline Smith DeWaal, Director of Food Safety for the Center for Science in the Public Interest, told NBC News: “It’s infrequent that we have a major outbreak from E. coli these days but when it happens, it’s very serious, and it can land quite a number of its victims in the hospital.”
According to CNN, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported “Seven confirmed and three likely cases of E. coli infection linked to raw clover sprouts” in Idaho and Washington State. Half are hospitalized.
CDC confirmed the raw clover sprouts come from Evergreen Fresh Sprouts LLC of Idaho, while some 14, 860 pounds of hummus and dip products came from Lansal, Inc. of Texas, and some bulk and packaged walnuts come from Sherman Produce. None of these products should be eaten for any reason!
Officials have pulled the products as precautionary steps aimed at guarding against possible “Listeria monocytogenes, which can cause serious or possible fatal infections in people with weakened immune systems.
Escherichia coli include a large batch of bacteria. The strain in the raw sprouts is Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli O121. These infections can cause severe diarrhea, stomach pain and vomiting. Hopefully, recovery comes within seven days, but in stronger complications kidney failure, pregnancy miscarriage, stillbirth, or serious infections in newborn babies can result.
CNN adds: “Symptoms of a Listeria infection in an otherwise healthy person include fever, muscle aches, stiff neck, headache, loss of balance and convulsions.”
This is the largest food-borne bacteria outbreak since the summer of 2008, when 7 million pounds of meat from Nebraska Beef were pulled and 79 were sickened.
Texas health officials included recall of: “Target Archer Farms hummus products nationwide. Certain Giant Eagle hummus products in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio and Maryland; 8-ounce container of Trader Joe’s Edamame Hummus is recalled in 17 states with use-by dates of April 28, April 29 and May 9; and containers of Tryst Yellow Lentil Hummus with Sunflower Seeds & Apricots.”
Lansal buyers can call 877-550-0694; for Sherman Produce call 314-231-2896.
This blogger will cover more on this outbreak soon. While asking Almighty God that no more poisons enter our nation’s food stream, remember to thank God always for every meal. As plus-sized Christian t-shirts declare: “Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread (Matthew 6: 10-11).”
Dr. Boring is on overseas assignment, so he has asked me (earthend’s Africa and Asia medical practitioner and correspondent) to issue this blog on preventive measures so readers should take in this day of globally spreading diseases.
Lizzie Bennett of Underground Medic writes: “The single most important thing you can do to prevent the spread of disease in a crisis is to keep your hands clean and keep them away from your nose and mouth.”
But she goes even further. “Wearing gloves when out and about will prevent you picking up germs on your hands. Be sure not to touch your nose or face until you have removed your gloves and washed your hands.”
In ‘Are You Ready Series: Pandemic Preparedness,’ Tess Pennington agrees: “Keep your hands clean. Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub or make your own natural hand sanitizer.” For self-made hand sanitizer, she suggests:
She suggests one cup of pure aloe vera gel, 1 or 2 teaspoons of witch hazel and 8 drops of essential oils, such as cedar wood, lavender, lemon, lemon grass, myrrh, neroli, patchouli, peppermint, rose, sandalwood, tea tree, thyme, etc.
Ms. Bennett’s next step may seem far-reaching, but days are coming when it may soon be necessary: “Have as little physical contact with ‘outsiders’ as possible and consider wearing a face mask or a scarf over your nose and mouth.
“In addition to forming a physical barrier to many airborne contaminants it minimizes the risks of hand to mouth contamination should you touch your face with contaminated fingers, be they gloved or not.”
Do you remember those days when thinking it odd that people asked you to remove your shoes before entering their home? Well Lizzie thinks that’s a good idea too: “Make sure you remove outerwear, including footwear before re-entering your home. Mites, ticks, feces etc picked up by your outer clothes will not make it indoors if you remove them and put them into a bucket with a lid.”
After seven days, bugs are gone. Also, “keep a tub of some kind full of bleach water just outside the door so that hands can be washed before entering. Pay attention to the area between the fingers, the tips of your fingers and your nails.”
For serious disease pandemics (which well may be coming soon), Tess Pennington also suggests: “1) Store a two week supply of water and food. During a pandemic, if you cannot get to a store, or if stores are out of supplies, it will be important for you to have extra supplies on hand; 2) Have a supply of face masks to wear around those who may be ill or exposed to the illness;
3) Periodically check your regular prescription drugs to ensure a continuous supply in your home; 4) Have any nonprescription drugs and other health supplies on hand, including pain relievers, stomach remedies, cough and cold medicines, fluids with electrolytes, and vitamins; 5) Prepare a sick room for the home to limit family member’s exposure to the virus.”
Finally, Pennington closes with more excellent advice: “Pandemic outbreaks are fast moving and vaccines may not be able to stop it. This natural occurring disaster is not one you should take lightly.”
But most Americans are not prepared for ‘normal’ illnesses, much less pandemics. Christians must keep in mind the slogan on earth-end’s plus-sized Christian t-shirts: “. . . I Am The LORD that healeth thee (Exodus 15: 26).”
John J. Jr.: Dear Jael: This is John J. Jr., you know the one you put in charge of the kids. Well, they are quite upset over the amount of blog space these medical reports get lately, especially stuff about MERS. They claim their issues loom just as large in importance. Well, almost as large, anyway.
Lucy Lip: Absolutely. We got stories about murders and suspects, not just about some yokels who flew over here with sick stuff from far away! Enough already! A year ago sea turtle poachers in Costa Rica kidnapped and killed Jairo Mora Sandovol, one of our long-time graduates who has worked for years to protect endangered sea turtles.
All us kids at international ‘earth-end’ joined 165,000 others to support Turtle Island Restoration Network protest demanding action against those guilty thugs. Six months ago police arrested seven men, but last week, prosecutors finally filed murder charges against them.
Todd Steiner, Network Director wrote to thank us “for all you do to protect our blue-green planet.” See Dr. Jael, we told you our work is very urgent! He writes: “With leatherbacks already pushed to the brink of extinction. . . nesting turtles need protection from illegal killing and poaching their eggs.
“The dedicated conservationists who patrol nesting beaches and reach sea turtle nests before poachers continue to need our support to ensure the survival of these gentle giant sea turtles and the safety of nest monitors.”
Editor Newspaper Kids: We agree Lucy. Our overseas reporters send in lots of stories about some people killed in Ukraine uprisings, and the dangers to kids. And money there is right, I mean common people are scared and poor. Ida Wells, IV can’t get a word in edgewise with this MERS stuff every day.
Maury Schultz, Esq.: I been sending in stories right and left, and even if I’m new here, it don’t make no sense that nothing gets on-line. What about those bear attacks in Florida? Not one animal blog at all. I can do better ‘en that at the Tribune. At least they’s seem to value kids news more.
Brother Michael: What bear attacks in Florida or anywhere else? Anyone hurt?
Maury: Well, in ‘Bear Drags Florida Woman from Garage,’ teens at CNN say this woman walked into her garage to find five bears roaming through her trash. Seminole County Sheriff’s Lt. Pete Brenenstuhl says one of ‘em “dragged her from inside the garage out into her driveway, leaving her with scrapes and cuts to her face and legs.” Neighbors say her face was all bloodied up! They took her to the hospital, but she is ok now I think.
And get this, those state wildlife guys tells people since winter’s over, bears and cubs will go through neighborhoods searching for food, so people should get “bear-resistant trash cans.” What kind of warning is that? Just get better trash cans? After all bears are in your house! Come on!
Brother Michael: That’s why Dr. Jael’s animal book warns about people encroaching on land that rightly belongs to animals. It ain’t right afore God. Like our plus size Christian t-shirts say God appointed us to be stewards over animals, not take their land and kill them for no reason:
“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth (Genesis 1: 26).” Dominion means to care for, like a king cares for his domain. Get it? Dominion––domain!
John J. Jr. Well doc, we’ll go now. Hope to hear from you with Good News soon!
We are all shocked and sadden at the news of the murder of our brother Jairo Mora Sandoval, who working with the Wider Caribbean Sea Turtle Conservation Network, was murdered because he protected sea turtle eggs that poachers wanted!
The 26-year-old conservationist had dedicated his life to protect endangered sea turtles and their nests of eggs from poachers and drug smugglers who wanted ‘ownership’ of the stretch of beach near Limon, Costa Rica, Jairo patrolled.
Although first kidnapped with three women in the Limon conservation party, the women escaped, but Sandoval was found beaten to death with his mouth stuffed with sand, as a warning that conservationists should keep their mouths shut.
Didiher Chacón, the coordinator for the Wider Caribbean Sea Turtle Conservation Network says: “With everything we know about what happened, it seems like it was an act of revenge Jairo didn’t drink. He didn’t smoke. He wasn’t involved in those kinds of things. We think it must have had to do with his work.”
Jairo had emailed friends: “Can you send messages to the police so they come to Moin Beach. Don’t be afraid, but just come armed. 60 turtles lost, not a single nest. We need help fast.” He also spoke to newspapers about turtle poaching.
Ashamedly, Costa Rican police and coast guards have for years been absent from beaches during turtle egg laying season. They must know that addicts sell these eggs to restaurants as aphrodisiacs for $ 1.00 each. They also know drug smugglers do not want people on beaches interfering with drug operations.
Extremely upset over Jairo death, another conservationist hero, Captain Paul Watson of Sea Shepherd, told Lindsay Fendt of The Tico Times: “If drug traffickers are landing on Costa Rican beaches why did the government remove the Coast Guard patrols of these beaches?
“If Columbian and Panamanian drug runners are running drugs onto these beaches, why are there not police there to intercept them? If turtle eggs are being served in restaurants on the Caribbean coast, why has the government not stepped in to stop this trade? If a tourist can see turtle eggs on a menu why can’t the police see the same thing?”
Jack Berry, writing for Vice.com says: “For years, volunteers in Costa Rica have battled against poachers to protect the endangered leatherback, green, and hawksbill turtle species as they move onto the country’s beaches to lay their eggs. And despite beatings, robberies, and threats at gunpoint, the conservationists protecting the dwindling turtle population have struggled on.’
Todd Steiner, executive director of the Turtle Island Restoration Network, said in an e-mail message that his group and others are setting up a fund for a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Sandoval’s killers.
As young people at earthend-newbeginning.com we thank God that time is almost over, that Jairo’s killers will soon be judged on earth and for all eternity. Everyday we wear on our plus size Christian t-shirts Apostle John’s closing prayer: “Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus (Revelation 22: 20).”
All national weather services stress that a record Monsoon of Heat hits the Western United States this weekend, sending sweltering temperatues well over 100 degrees in most major cities from California upwards to Canada.
Officials at The Extinction Protocol and Accuweather are particularly concerned that such unreasonable heat creates dry fuels easily sparked by rolling but waterless thunderstorms elevating wildfire threats.
According to Weather Space: “Temperatures in the 100s across Phoenix will turn to 115+, with 120+ along the Colorado River Valley as a ridge of high pressure builds in the area. This ridge will be very large, bringing temperatures 15-20 degrees higher than normal for Arizona, California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, New Mexico, and Utah.”
Starting this weekend, the heatwave is expected to extend through next week. Populated cities present special concern. Temperatues well over 100º will hover over major metropolitan areas, including: “Las Vegas, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, Denver, Boise, Idaho, Rawlins, Wyo., Medford, Ore., and Fresno, Calif.”
Weather experts warn drivers not to try extended travel on desert highways until this wave breaks. Western Weather expert, Ken Clark says: “People driving through desert areas during the pattern should make sure their vehicle can make the journey and that they carry extra water in case their vehicle breaks down.”
His colleagues also advise that beaches should be avoided because of the excessive heat. However, those on the East Coast will welcome such weather, as rainfall is expected to continually drench that area into early July.
Alex Sosnowski, Expert Senior Meteorologist at AccuWeather.com adds: “Cities that could set new annual extreme temperature marks include Flagstaff, Ariz., Las Vegas and Reno, Nev. In Flagstaff, Ariz., the all-time record high is 97 set on July 5, 1973. In Las Vegas, the all-time record high is 117 degrees set on July 19, 2005 and July 24, 1942. At Reno, the all-time high is 108 degrees set most recently on July 5, 2007. Death Valley, Calif. could reach their hottest June temperature on record of 128 degrees set June 30, 1994.”
The Weather Space.com network advises also: “On June 15th, the Southwestern United States Monsoon officially started. The official dates go from June 15th through September 15th and gives the Southwestern United States shower and thunderstorm activity . . .
“The monsoon is a seasonal shift in the mid and upper level winds. This drives moisture up from the Gulf of Mexico and/or Mexico from the southeast, instead of the usual dry west flow over the region.”
As half of America suffers under such oppressive heat, and the other half shivers in rolling rain, let us remember to strengthen our faith in Almighty God. As plus-size Christian t-shirts promise: “The eternal God is Thy Refuge, and underneath are the Everlasting Arms . . . (Deuteronomy 33: 27).”
Last summer brought dreadful epidemics to our country, including those from Global Warming’s hot weather bringing hordes of poisonous insects, as well as from man-made negligence shared by government and private organizations.
Now public and private researchers and the World Health Organization work to prevent pandemics this summer. But unless the nation makes drastic changes in seasonal practices of farm fairs, insect eradication, and government oversight, it is doubtful that U.S. science––not to mention illegal pharmaceutical and other profit-making enterprises––can withstand coming disasters this summer.
As of today, 24 people in China are extremely ill, with seven of them expired, from a new disease labeled the H7N9 bird flu virus. And those are patient statistics the Chinese government admits. God knows how many others there are!
In ‘China’s Bird Flu Death Toll Rises As WHO May Send Team,’ Associated Press (AP) quotes Liang Wannian, Director of the Chinese health agency’s H7N9 flu prevention and control office: “There could be additional infections, both among animals and humans, in other regions and authorities. [We] have stepped up measures to monitor cases of pneumonia with unexplained causes.”
The Chinese government has shut down the sale of live poultry in public markets, and have already slaughtered thousands of chickens. Another AP story, ‘Bird Flu 101: How Bad Is the New H7N9 Strain?,’ reports that this virus does not sicken birds and thus spreads easily between them, but it can spread to humans. So far, apparently there is no evidence of human to human transmission.
Reuters News Service writes that the White House is monitoring this disease’s development in China, and that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has already started work on a vaccine. But it could take up to six months before mass production begins.
However, deadly diseases, germs, virus, and other infections, as well as air and water pollution, is rife in China. As Laurie Garrett reports in ‘Is This A Pandemic Being Born?,’ for Foreign Policy Magazine: “China’s mysterious pig, duck, and people deaths could be connected. And that should worry us.”
She further explains: “Children playing along an urban river bank [would] spot hundreds of grotesque, bloated pig carcasses bobbing downstream. Hundreds of miles away, angry citizens [would] protest the rising stench from piles of dead ducks and swans, their rotting bodies collecting by the thousands along river banks. . . And while the world was left to wonder how the pigs, ducks, swans, and people might be connected, the World Health Organization [would] release deliberately terse statements, offering little insight.”
China wants to continue its trading relationship with the U.S., but at what price to the health of our nation? Christian believers must exercise faith in verses put on plus size Christian t-shirts: “Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you (Luke 10: 19).”
O.K. O.K. I’m not happy. I had a huge lead on the ‘truth’ of why basketball player, Dennis Rodman, was really in North Korea, and how he got a ‘private’ meeting with president, Kim Jong-il––but Jael pulled me back to the U.S. to check on new stories about leaks in nuclear power plants! How can I be an international correspondent when I’m not allowed to follow-up ‘zowee’ stories like this one.
Oh well, that’s on Jael. You know bosses, they think they know everything. OK she says Nuc Experts in the U.S. insist: 1) Leaks found in plants here; 2) Regulators found in ‘Cahoots with plant owners;’ 3) Owners refusing to move waste materials to safer areas; 4) Politicians aren’t listening. So what else is new!
In ‘6 Tanks at Hanford Nuclear Site in Wash. Leaking,’ Associated Press reporter, Shannon Dininny, cites Washington State governor, Jay Inslee, who told federal officials that “Six underground tanks that hold a brew of radioactive and toxic waste at the nation’s most contaminated nuclear site are leaking.”
So then Inslee tells the public: “the leaking material poses no immediate risk to public safety or the environment because it would take a while—perhaps years––to reach groundwater.” And the feds are trying to decide what to do????
Dininny writes: “Hanford’s tanks hold some 53 million gallons of highly radioactive waste—enough to fill dozens of Olympic-size swimming pools—and many of those tanks are known to have leaked in the past. An estimated 1 million gallons of radioactive liquid already leaked there.” And feds are trying to do . . .?
The problem: “Cleanup is expected to . . . cost billions of dollars.” And profit-making nuclear plant owners do not want to pay to clean-up their own mess. Reporting on leaking waste at New York plants, Eric Lipton and Matthew L. Wald point out in ‘Post-Fukushima, Arguments for Nuclear Safety Bog Down’ on Constellation Energy, owner of the famous Nine Mile Point plant on Lake Ontario:
“It was part of an intense lobbying campaign against a proposed rule that would require utilities to spend millions of dollars on safety equipment that could reduce the effects of an accident like the Fukushima meltdown. . . the company tried to show it could handle emergencies without new devices and, of course, everything went according to plan.
“The industry has held private meetings with commissioners and their staffs, organized a drill like the one . . . and helped line up . . .support from dozens of members of Congress, many of whom received industry campaign contributions.”
As head of Nuc. Regulatory Commission, Gregory B. Jaczko, said: “ . . . too often, when faced with tough policy calls, a majority of this current commission has taken an approach that is not as protective of public health and safety . . .”
So money trumps lives? Plus size Christian t-shirts ask Americans to pray. Only God can protect us from these leaks: “The LORD is far from the wicked: but He heareth the prayer of the righteous (Proverbs 15: 29).”
Around the world, earth’s weakened structure shows overwhelming evidence that it is collapsing. Man-made structures, transportation, and industrial operations continuously destruct, sinking the planet’s shell deeply into its failing self.
If these collapses continue unabated––and mankind has no power to stop them––they will end life on this planet as we know it. Planet Earth is telling mankind that it just can’t take any more of our “modern advancements”!
Here are just a few cases: “A stretch of U.S. 89 in northern Arizona will remain closed indefinitely because . . . The road collapsed [which also closed] Cocoon College campus in Page” nearby.
In the urban center of Guangzhou, China recently, the ground under several buildings and commercial shops opened up with deafening noises and sending smells of escaping gases that could be sensed miles away.
Also this week, a broken water main in a residential area of Grand Rapids, MI, blew open a city block-size sink hole, flooding streets and yards, forcing some residents to evacuate and threatening to dismember telephone lines.
For one detailed example of how these sink holes can vastly effect modern life: Last November, a monster sinkhole swallowed up huge swaths of forest acreage near Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Dr. Steve Elwart, research analyst with the Koinonia Institute and a U.S. Homeland Security consultant, explains:
“Southern Louisiana is in danger of experiencing an environmental calamity rivaling the BP Deepwater Horizon disaster, thanks to a massive, expanding sinkhole that is gobbling up the forest.” Last summer huge bubbles of hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide and other explosive levels of natural gasses popped up in the bayou, along with ground tremors. Several residents had to be evacuated.
Finally a sink hole opened up, in some places 422 feet deep, and began swallowing up trees 100 feet tall. The United States Geological Service estimates that hole is now a canyon over six acres in size, and now threatens an underground storage tank holding 63 million gallons of butane gas.
Apparently the Texas Brine Company caused this galloping catastrophe by digging in salt domes beneath the bayous. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers claims these caverns are part of the Napoleonville salt dome formation, “used for the commercial mining of petroleum, salt and sulfur.”
Officials expect the hole’s continuous expansion could eventually cause massive natural gas explosions. Landowners have sued Texas Brine and Louisiana Department of Resources, claiming this sink hole endangers their lives, affects their drinking water, and defenders covered up facts about these threats for years.
Clearly, man’s greed and selfishness is causing earth to collapse upon itself. Would to God, Christians would produce plus size Christian t-shirts with the promise of Revelation 11: 18: “ . . . and Thy wrath is come . . . that they should be judged, and That thou shouldest . . . destroy them which destroy the earth.”
The American people, and their leaders need to think long and hard before joining the French army in fighting against Islamic militants who have invaded Northern Mali. Calling themselves Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb and Ansar Dine, and overcoming the Mali military, they have installed Shariah law.
Finally as Islamists pushed further south, the Mali government and other African leaders have persuaded the United Nations, and France in particular, to take up arms. And France called on its ally, the United States, to provide transportation through the U.S. Air Force.
While France began fighting in Mali on January 11, this week, in C-17 Globemaster III transport jets, flying for the U.S. Africa Command, our Air Force began carrying French soldiers and military equipment from Istres, France to Bamako, Mali.
Moreover, according to ‘Air Force Delivers French Troops to Mali,’ by Air Force Staff Sgt. Nathanael Callon, “the United States deployed airmen from the 621st Contingency Response Wing from Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J., and multiple C-17 aircrews to a French air base here.
“Cargo and equipment are prepared by the French, and load plans are given to the U.S. aircraft commander for review, said Maj. Eric Chabaud, Chief of Aircraft Services here for the French Air Force.” So if France has an Air Force, why does it need help from the U.S.?
Academics who know the true history of France in Africa, and of the so-called ‘end of colonialism,’ remain skeptical of France’s interest in Mali and of its intentions. And they send warnings to the U.S. government to be very cautious.
Aware that France’s rule over some African nations has never ended, they point out that France, and other European nations, imposed borders on African nations, based in the natural wealth in areas most valued by colonizers, often dividing tribes, and geographical histories without regard to African cultures.
Instead African states, trying to accommodate ‘ex-colonists,’ must speak French, as well as their own and other tribal dialects. And like Spain’s continuing grip over South America, France controls the economies of Mali and other nations of that continent through local puppet governments and French monetary systems.
As Prof. Bronwyn Winter of the University of Sydney writes: “French interests in the region are no doubt economic as much as political. Apart from some 6,000 French citizens living in Mali and a significant Malian diasporic population in France, this former French colony is Africa’s third gold producer as well as the site of as-yet unexploited uranium, gas and petroleum reserves.”
Bible commentators argue that the U.S. is not mentioned in Scripture as participating in WWIII, but this is how it could happen: we choose to enter a battle which is not our own. Put this on plus size Christian t-shirts for soldiers, generals and politicians: “Wisdom is better than weapons of war (Ecclesiastes 9:18).”
John J. Jr.: Dr. Jael, Rev. Repriestly and Sarah Newsworthy have asked everyone to think about reorganizing work loads and expanding staffs if needed. So they said we could start an Animal Story Updates by Newspaper Kids division.
Allie: Well Sissy wants to tell about cows tails falling off, birds having funerals and people stealing land from bees, but I think we should do a special Newspaper Kids edition on elephant and rhino poaching in Africa.
Sissy: This absolutely ain’t fair. She can’t talk about what I want. Besides, Andy and I want to be bosses of the animal division, and not Allie!
John J. Jr.: Oh come on. You start this again Sissy and the grown-ups will fire us quick. Allie, you start the story on elephants, and Sissy, you and Andy work on our next edition. And no more back-scrapping. We ain’t enemies. We work together for God. Remember what our plus size Christian t-shirts say about that.
Allie: Well, everyone knows poachers are killing elephants and rhinos to get their ivory tusks. But late last year, the number of these animal murders greatly increased. African game police and poachers even die in gun fights.
Farley: And there is so much undercover dirty dealing in governments, no one seems to really protect the animals. And now United Press International (UPI) says “heavily armed African rebels and militias . . . use profits from the illegal poaching and sale of ivory to fund wars across the continent.”
Allie: Yes the UPI story says these groups killing God’s precious animals to extinction “include the Islamist al-Shabaab of Somalia; the Janjaweed tribal warriors of Sudan and the Lord’s Resistance Army of Uganda who have turned the savannah of central and southern Africa into what the German news magazine Der Spiegel calls “a Killing Fields for elephants.”
Sissy: Why, this is awful. They’re killing innocent animals to get money to go kill people. John, we must do something! What can we do?
Farley: These ivory tusks are going to Asia, particularly to China and Thailand where two pounds of ivory can sell for $ 2,000 on illegal black markets.
Druggists and people in those countries think ground-up ivory can heal people, but our government’s health people say they can’t heal anything.
Allie: And now they’re shooting these poor animals down from overhead in helicopters, sometimes wiping out entire family herds. Police find 10 to 15 dead animals bunched together dead, with their tusks cut out.
Sissy: Come on John. Say something. We have to act now against this!
John J. Jr.: Well, one thing we can write our U.S. Senators and ask them what is being done among nations to stop it, you know if international police can work on this problem. Also we can raise funds for the World Wildlife Fund. The WWF is doing all it can to stop the ivory trade destroying these animals forever.
Sissy: O.k. Great. That’s a start. Let’s get to work!
