Our Sister Nation Awash in Unnatural Rains, Floods & Power Outages

flooding-Canada    Just a few days after destructive floods in Canada’s largest Western city, Calgary, her largest Eastern city, Toronto, yesterday suffered historically unnatural down-pouring––a month’s worth of rain in just two hours.

The torrents of rain and subsequent flooding caught Toronto residents completely by surprise.  People were lined up on streets waiting for streetcars, and within seconds, those streets turned into rivers.

Don Peat and Angela Hennessy of QMI quote Ralph Siekanowicz who was getting home from work: “It’s unbelievable, water was pouring down the stairs in the subway station and then the lights went out, it was really scary. When we got outside, you could see parked cars surrounded in water up to their windows.”

The City of Toronto’s latest update says that some 300,000 people in the city are without power.  Authorities urged residents to stay in place, avoiding travel.  Jennifer Angiers said her building lost power 6 p.m. last night said:  “I can literally see waves on the street, it doesn’t look like King St.––it looks like a river.”

“This is likely the wettest moment in Toronto’s history. By the end, we may have a new all-time one-day record.” David Phillips, senior climatologist with Environment Canada.  Basements throughout the city are flooded, and river banks threaten to collapse.  Like most cities, asphalt makes Toronto subject to flooding.

Extinction Protocol and Raveena Aulakh of Star.com label Toronto’s rainfall ‘epic:’  “More than 90 millimeters of rainfall was recorded at Pearson International Airport in just two hours, starting at about 4:30 p.m. To put it in perspective, the wettest day in Toronto was Oct. 15, 1954, when Hurricane Hazel slammed the city and 121.4 millimeters of rainfall was recorded over the entire day.”

They explain:  “As temperatures rise globally, so do the chances of extreme weather. The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change said in its 2012 report that short, powerful rains, hurricanes, heat waves and droughts will intensify. . . . the average global temperature could rise anywhere between 1.6 and 4.4 degrees C. . . That includes fewer but more extreme rainstorms.

According to AFP News Service, some 100,000 people in Calgary towards the end of June were evacuated.  Three lives Calgary-floodingwere lost, and floods washed away roads and bridges, and submerged hundreds of homes.

Some 1500 Calgary residents are in shelters and hundreds more stay with families. Hundreds of cattle drowned. Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper told news services: “This is incredible.  “I don’t think any of us have seen anything like this before.”  Public transportation is shut down and schools are closed.

What will it take for people to understand that there is no safe zone in these last days?  Global Warming assures that things will get much worst.  As Christian children’s T-Shirts warn:  “But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer (1 Peter 4: 7).”

Happy 4th of July: The Newspaper Boys and Girls Association, Int’l

4thJulyKidsJohn J. Jr.:  As we prepare to celebrate the 4th of July anniversary of our country’s Declaration of Independence, we are honored to welcome new workers from the associations of newspaper kids to our intern ranks.

Let us take this opportunity to thank you for all the diligent work you do to send in urgent news stories from around the world.  And of course we congratulate our kids at home for their promotion to internships as well.

Intern Sissy:  Of course I wanted to intern with sassy Ms. Feermeno, and write about animals. But nooo!  Her beat is nuclear energy wars, so to do stories about dreadful declines in animal species, they stick me with Butterman.

Intern Violet: Don’t feel bad Sissy.  They stuck me with Newsworthy and she assigns me to work on volcanoes. Such gooey stuff.  So I’m flooded with news carriers from Extinction Protocol and its news outlets every day. ugh!

Intern Ernie: Oh quit your belly aching Violet. I’m an understudy with Sarah Newsworthy too. I mark up stories on earthquakes everywhere.  Neat!

Intern Wally:  I am so glad I’m working with Wendy Weathersbee. She assigned me to research tornadoes, hurricanes and other violent storms.  Neat!

Intern Frank:  Frank Fredericks here. Newsworthy assigned me to forest fires and drought. Hot work, but I’m glad to be aboard. She had me send a memo to the prayer teams for the families of those 19 firefighters we lost recently!

Farley:  I think Sissy’s right John.  We need to do more on animals––wild and domestic––and insects, etc., rather than sending kids out to these new things.

Allie:  Yeah, and no one writings about disappearing bees and butterflies anymore. If we don’t have kids to do it, who kids-marching-4thwill?

John J. Jr.:  Don’t worry.  We’ll get more kids.  The news corp. babies are growing up. They’ll take up the slack.

Intern Terry:  Wait, wait for me!  John assigned me to work with Taryn at I.E.     Plexus. I have to make sure orders get out and new products are added and proof read all the blogs.  Neat O!  Taryn get’s frustrated sometimes with Jael’s ah lack of attention to business details on occasion.

Intern Paul:  Wait for me too! Rev. Repriestly sent me to bolster the prayer teams.  So I’m working with Brothers Michael, John, and Jude to learn how to pray. Wow! I had no idea there are so many things to pray about.

John J. Jr.: Great!  With that in mind, let’s thank God for the U.S. A.  And Pray for Our Country on this 4th of July.  As our Christian childrens t-shirts say:  “This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it (Psalm 118: 24).”

Another Casualty from Summer’s Heatwave: Unclean Natural Waters

posted by Jael Ever @ 10:24 AM
July 29, 2011

Let’s be clear about this:  Do not swim or play in green algae water with green algae floating on top!  Do not believe the hype that green algae in water is harmless!  The algae showing up in lakes, rivers, ponds and streams across the country is caused by extremely hot weather, with lots of sunshine, little or no wind, even less rain, and non-receding flood waters––all resulting in too much unhealthy stagnant non-flowing water.   While bureaucrats in charge of the public’s health in countries like China claim the algae is harmless, those in this country disagree.

Tom Langer, Director of the bureau of Environmental Health in the Kansas Department of Health and Environment tells Aleese Kopf, Kansas City Star reporter, “We have seen a unique set of factors this year combine to make perfect conditions for algae blooms.”  Langer says that the department has had a significant increase in the number of health complaints after people visit Kansas water sites.  “Symptoms can range from a sore throat or cough to itchy skin and vomiting.”  But so far there have been no serious illnesses.  However, these algae blooms can also harm dogs, cattle and other animals that drink the water.  Langer is also receiving reports for dead fish pilling up from “not harmful” algae.  Pointing out that treating algae with chemicals is expensive and impractical, Langer also says that algae blooms typify poor water quality.

Moreover, in its recent publication “Blue-Green Algae (Cyanobacteria) Blooms,” the California Department of Public Health ratchets upward the risks that blue-green algae blooms bring:  “Exposure to blue-green algae can cause rashes, skin and eye irritation, allergic reactions, gastrointestinal upset, and other effects.  At high levels, exposure can result in serious illness or death.”  These health workers further add that the type of bloom and length of exposure can also cause liver toxicity and promote the growth of tumors.  They also add that several dogs and otters have died after drinking the blue-green algae water.

Further, California officials report: “There aren’t any drinking water standards specifically for blue-green algae.”  So have no body contact whatsoever with blue-green algae blooms, no swimming, wading or water-skiing.  These rules especially start with children, and move up to adults.  Let’s make this simple:  Stay away from all blue-green algae water!  And, oh yes, also don’t eat any fish that come out of it!  And this also includes water that appears to be all green!

So Play Safe This Summer! Dress the kids in Christian childrens t-shirts and take them to well-sanitized swimming pools for outings and vacations.  And be sure to tell others about Jesus this summer in order to avoid Jeremiah’s lament:  “The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved (8: 20).”

To Green or Not to Green: That Is The Question!

posted by Jael Ever @ 19:24 PM

Just as the Japanese government insists on continuing with nuclear power in spite of the death and destruction this energy system has had on their people, apparently the United States plans to give its citizens the same misguided, unwarranted lack of protection with new or retrofitted coal plants. Apparently to avoid public protests, the new game plan is to allow coal plant companies to lease more public land. Coal companies would be allowed to open mines in Wyoming and Montana, in an area known as the Powder River Basin. Apparently, Congress left enough loopholes to allow mining in these areas that would not be possible in non-public lands. Thus, complete hearings on the affects of such mining on air, water and climate temperatures will never take place.

A recent report from the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) indicates that building new coal plants or retrofitting old ones makes no financial sense. The report insists: “The truth is that coal is far from cheap, and we can no longer afford the staggering economic, public health, and environmental costs of continued reliance on this outdated energy source.” Instead, UCS researchers call for the same funding to be used to build new renewable energy systems, such as wind and solar power, and phasing out coal burning power plants.

While proponents argue that coal mining is a boon, providing jobs for the American economy, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency argues otherwise. One EPA reports posits: “Burning coal is a leading cause of smog, acid rain, global warming, and air toxins.” The report argues that coal firing plants: 1) Produce almost 4 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2), the main cause of Global Warming; 2) Emit 10,000 tons of sulfur dioxide (SO2) causing acid rain, damaging forests, lakes and buildings and leaving particles in the air that can go into lungs, causing bronchitis, asthma and poor eyesight; 3) 10,200 tons of nitrogen oxide (NOx) forming as much ozone smog as a half million late-model cars; 4) 720 tons of carbon monoxide (CO) bringing headaches and stress on those with heart disease; 5) 170 pounds of mercury, a teaspoon of which can poison fish in a 25-acre lake; 6) 225 pounds of cancer-causing arsenic; and 7) 114 pounds of lead, 4 pounds of cadmium, other heavy metals, as well as uranium–all of which can kill.

Thus, the government is at war with itself–agencies calling for more mining to fuel coal-fired plants versus those advocating for the public health. As President Lincoln said, a nation warring against itself cannot stand. Christians must ask God to give the leaders of this nation wisdom to know how to design job-producing energy that will also protect public health. Proverbs 4: 7 advises: “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.” Protecting the breath and health of children must be a priority. Dressing them in Christian childrens T-shirts is purely a blessing of joy.

Finding the right kids gifts!

posted by Shopping4Bargains @ 19:13 PM
July 26, 2010

Every year I have to buy gifts for my four nieces and nephews. I struggle to find a child’s gift that they will enjoy and their parents will think is practical.  I am not allowed to give them any video games, I have exhausted all the acceptable DVD’s and they do not like board games that are too hard for them to understand.

I was thrilled this year when I found Christian kids t-shirts on the internet. Not only are they cute and the kids will love the cool designs but they are practical which will make the parents happy. I particularly like the prices because they are wholesale Christian kids t-shirts that are sold to the public. Also I can spread the word and give them great gifts.
